10/19/1968 – Dedication services are scheduled for tomorrow for the newly constructed First Baptist Church of Ford City. The church was erected at Center Avenue and Hansotte St (Hansotte Plan) in Manor Township. The new building and grounds cost more than $260,000 and the construction was completed in December 1967. The Reverend F. Forrest Sparks is pastor of the congregation.
10/19/1968 – An increase of approximately 10.5 percent in postal rates for parcel post and catalog mail go into effect today, according to Kittanning Postmaster Michael Vongrey. “Higher rates for delivery of packages and catalogs are required to bring revenue from this type of mail within 4% of operating costs, as required by law,” Vongrey said. “Higher costs have resulted from pay increases last year for postal employees.”
10/19/1968 – Commissioners were commended for the “clean and orderly condition” of the Armstrong County Prison in a report of an inspection by the Bureau of Correction of the State Department of Justice. At the time of the inspection, nine persons were confined to the prison.
10/19/1968 – William Pendleton, formerly of Ford City, has been named director of the Model Cities program in South Oakland, Pittsburgh. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Randle Pendleton of 232-5th Ave, Ford City. He attended Ford City High School and is best remembered as “Spike” on the Ford City High School basketball team.
10/19/1963 - A hard luck Kittanning Wildcat football team gave a Rostraver 11 a good scare last night, but could not follow thru on a brilliant first half and fell to its 6th straight defeat, 13-7. Henry Horvat, Wildcat right half, scored all Kittanning points.
10/19/1963 - A severe multimillion dollar drought stretching from Maine to Texas worsened today with little hope for immediate relief. The Weather Bureau said it appeared to be the worst drought in Ohio in 30 years.
10/19/1953 - Ford City- M.J. Glenn, postmaster, will retire from his position after 19 years in charge of the local office. No successor to the post has been named.
10/19/1953 - East Brady- State police from Clarion substation recovered checks valued at $2300 which was part of $4000 stolen from the filing cabinet of the local Busy Bee Market.
10/19/1948 - A 2nd case of spinal meningitis was diagnosed in Armstrong Co. yesterday, less than 48 hours after death of the first victim. The newest victim is 15 month old Carol Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith of Cowansville. The first one, Helen Farster, 12 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Farster of Templeton, died shortly before midnight, following a 72 hour illness.
10/19/1948 - A house to house collection will be made to pick up bundles of clothing, shoes, and other supplies as the Tri-Hi-Y Club in the local schools pushed forward its “Save the Children” drive.
10/19/1943 - The 19th annual convention of Armstrong Co. Council of Republican Women will be held in Union Ave. Methodist Church. Main speaker for the occasion will be Carl Tinstman, former Kittanning resident, now associated with the state Dept. of Health in Harrisburg.
10/19/1943 - Mr. and Mrs. Byron Mulberger of Cowanshannock Twp. received a telegram from the War Dept. advising that their son, Dean Mulberger, had been injured 17 Oct. in an aircraft accident and had succumbed to his injuries. The accident took place at the Army Air Base at Blythe Field, CA.
10/19/1938 - Several hay and straw stacks, and a small frame barn on the farm of Kenneth Bricker, near Boggsville, were destroyed by a fire.
10/19/1938 - Ford City- Loss was about $1100 in a fire at the 2 story frame double house at 820-822 5th Ave., owned by Leo Liberto, Fire Chief E.N. Martin said.
10/19/1933 - Hunting licenses issued in Armstrong Co. are rapidly nearing the 3000 mark, County Treasurer Roy P. Bowser reports.
10/19/1933 - A courthouse addition to enlarge the county treasurer’s quarters is nearing completion. A doorway between the county treasurer’s office and the one story addition has been already made and most of the brickwork is finished.
10/19/1928 - Ford City- Word was received here this morning by W.J. Boggs that the Rev. D.T. Scott, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Belford, Indiana, had accepted a call from the First Presbyterian Church here and will take up his duties about the middle of November. The Rev. Scott succeeds the Rev. B.B. Harrison, who died over a year ago.
10/19/1928 - Ford City American Legion Post scored another outstanding success in the opening of its annual show in the Ford City High School auditorium. Composed entirely of Ford City talent, the musical comedy, “Page and Prince”, gave a large audience over 2 hours of pleasing entertainment.
