Historical Headlines - October 1

10/1/1968 – A new Whitesburg Methodist Church is being constructed to the left of the old church and social hall. It is scheduled for completion later this year. Original church was built 97 years ago and is still in use. Pastor is the Rev. Howard E. Stuart. New building will be consecrated on January 12, 1969 by Roy C. Nichols, Bishop of Western Pennsylvania Conference.

10/1/1968 – The Logans Ferry Mine, which provided coal for 49 years for the West Penn Power plant at Springdale, closed at midnight. The mine employed 137 men. It was operated by the Allegheny Pittsburgh Coal Co.

10/1/1963 - Armstrong Co. boroughs and townships are scheduled this week to receive $132,118.77 as their shares of liquid fuel taxes from the Commonwealth. Gov. William W. Scranton said the county figures are part of $10.2 million local governments will receive this week for street maintenance.

10/1/1958 - Two children and a truck driver narrowly escaped death yesterday when a tractor trailer, loaded with barrels of tar and rolls of tar paper, smashed into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kohut, Edgewood (Kittanning RD 1). The driver of the truck was Joseph E. Dawson of Wilkinsburg and the children were Linda Clever and her brother Basil who were watching television when the truck crashed into their house.

10/1/1958 - Contracts were awarded by Madison Twp. School Board of Armstrong Co. for the construction of a new elementary school on a site along the highway about midway between Kellersburg and Widnoon.

10/1/1953 - A flash fire swept thru a building this morning at M. N. Adelson and Sons, Incorporated, Ford City, destroying the brick structure.

10/1/1953 - About 5000 people watched Justice of the Peace Guy C. Lasher of Kittanning RD 1 unite in matrimony a stock car racer and his fiancé at Blanket Hill Speedway last night. Miss Esther Mae McEwen of West Leechburg became the bride of Dick Hecker of New Kensington.

10/1/1948 - More than 3000 school children visited Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries in Ford City this morning. Schools represented were Kittanning, West Kittanning, Freeport, Rural Valley, Ford City, Cadogan, Worthington, and Cowanshannock.

10/1/1948 - Ford City- Joan Gowetski, a senior at Ford City HS, made the highest score in competitive examination dealing with the state of PA. As a result she earned a chance to write an essay on “My Future In Pennsylvania”. It will be judged with similar essay ones from all high schools of the commonwealth.

10/1/1943 - County bond sales reached $2,811,054.84.

10/1/1943 - Washington- Eastern “A” card motorists got their long awaited boosts in gasoline rations today at the expense of “B” and “C” card holders everywhere east of the Rocky Mountains.

10/1/1938 - The German army entered Czechoslovakia Sudentenland at the 0 hour of 2pm today.

10/1/1938 - Several thousand cubic yards of material have been excavated from the spillway at Crooked Creek flood control dam near Tunnelville and placed in the embankment impervious section on the right bank.

10/1/1928 - The courthouse annex was completed last week. Register and Recorder W.E. McGarvey is the first official one to occupy quarters in the new structure.

10/1/1928 - Mrs. Joseph Minteer, 68, died at her home in McGrann after an illness of 9 years.
