Historical Headlines - July 23

7/23/1968 - The search continued their efforts to recover the body of a Pittsburgh youth who drowned in Wattersonville yesterday. William Joseph Hubenthall, 15, went down in about 30 feet of water despite efforts by his father to rescue him. The victim was floating on an inflated inner tube preparing to be towed to shore with a water ski line attached to a motor boat when the force of the motor capsized the inner tube. The tragedy occurred as a violent thunderstorm sturck the area, chasing vacationers out of the water.

7/23/1968 - A rekindled brush and forest fire yesterday burned an additional 140 acres of growth on “River Hill” in the Kelly Station-Logansport vacinity, above the Logansport Dam on the Allegheny River. The same section had been scoured of about 60 acres of brush and trees earlier as five fire companies battled the blaze. Bethel Township firemen spent 11 hours fighting the blaze with the assistance of Ford City, Ford Cliff, Manor, and Gilpin townships. Bull dozers were brought in to open sections for bringing in firefighting equipment and plow out fire-break lines. The heat was so intense the equipment had to be staged away from the immediate blaze. The fire was so intense that it frequently jumped the fire breaks.

7/23/1963 - The appointment. of Edward H Pechan- son of a Ford City man- as Allegheny District sales supervisor for West Penn Power Co, with headquarters at the utility’s Arnold office, has been announced by district manager, Kenneth E. Rupert.

7/23/1958 - Dr. John Gemperlein, formerly of Pittsburgh, recently accepted the position of pathologist at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital succeeding Dr. Theodore Baker Jr, who resigned recently.

7/23/1958 - For the 2nd time within a week, residents of Oak Ave were nearly flooded from their homes by the heavy rains of last night.

7/23/1958 - “King Scott”, owned by Robert Iseman of Ford City RD 2, was a winner in Grandview harness racing. The 2 year old black stallion was trained and driven by Cecil Champion.

7/23/1953 - Rain causes some damage, much good. Overnight fall here 3.6 inches. Power service interrupted in scattered areas; scores of cellars flooded.

7/23/1953 - 2 aged Bridgeburg residents, man and wife, were under oxygen treatment at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital today, the man after suffering a stroke and his wife from the shock of finding him unconscious. The victims were Mr. and Mrs. John M. Steffy, 75.

7/23/1948 - A “baby tornado” swept thru a section of South Buffalo Twp near McVille. Wind poured into the Richard Hill home and tore a section of the roof. Blankets from a bed were rolled into a ball and placed neatly in the corner of a bedroom.

7/23/1948- The younger set of Kittanning and environs- some 275 strong ones- uncorked their energy, enthusiasm, and artistic energies today in Montgomery Ward’s bicycle safety parade on downtown streets.

7/23/1943 - A Kittanning native one, Neil T Bish, 23, has been killed in the airplane crash in NY State according to word received today from Mitchell Field, NY, and by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. SC Bish of Dayton.

7/23/1943 - Bleeding centre averages 172 pints of blood daily. Hard work by Red Cross volunteers pays off in efficient program here.

7/23/1943 - A mortgage which 11 years ago amounted to $8,000 will be burnt Sunday in a special service planned by the Manorville Methodist Church to mark the occasion.

7/23/1938 - An 8 coach special troop train pulled out of Ford City railway station shortly before last midnight, carrying members of Company C of Ford City and 3 other 12th Regiment units from Franklin and Oil City to the scene of the PA National Guard’s annual 2 week maneuvers at Indiantown Gap.

7/23/1938 - Mrs. Ella B Black, state president, and Mrs. Alvin Sherbine, state director of alcohol education, both of Cambria County, were principal speakers at the Wednesday afternoon and evening sessions of the Armstrong County Women’s Christian Temperance Union convention held in Apollo. Miss Laura A Guthrie, who has served as president for a number of years, was reelected.

7/23/1928 - During a violent rainstorm, the wagon shed of Harry Nicholson, West Franklin Twp, was struck by lightning.

7/23/1928 - 125 relatives attended the Smeltzer reunion at the George Smeltzer Grove, Manor Twp. Officers for the upcoming year were elected.
