6/15/1968 - A former Dayton resident, Jerry Schrecengost, was paddling down the Ohio River today, five days beyond Kittanning and two weeks and 200-plus miles from startoff on what he and four buddies hope will be a world’s record canoe trip. Schrecengost was sunburned and arm-weary on the 24-hour layover in Kittanning, but was undaunted in his determination to not call off the voyage short of the Gulf of Mexico. At Tionesta, a marauding bear was at their campsite. At the layover at East Brady, they had to break out the snakebite kit that ended up in treatment at the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.
6/15/1968 - Gary Allen Lorigan, son of Mr. & Mrs. Leo C. Lorigan of 714 Ferne Drive in Kittanning was among 350 Allegheny College students to receive degrees in commencement exercises. Lorigan, a psychology major, received a Bachelor of Arts degree. The commencement speech was given by New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller.
6/15/1968 - Lillian Elkin, 53, of Kittanning RD2, was in satisfactory condition after injuring her left leg in a fall. Stephen Wranich, 2, of Kittanning RD6 was in satisfactory condition after a head injury received in a fall off a flight of steps. Harry Crownover, 7, of Kittanning RD2 was treated for abrasions of the body after being hit with a car on Brick Church Road near Shay.
6/15/1968 - In the last twelve years, we have watched employment at our major industry decline from 3,600 to around 1,700. That means we have lost 1,900 jobs since 1956. However, retail sales increased. In Kittanning, retail sales increased $1,200,000 during 1967. And Ford City and areas west of Kittanning are showing new homes that weren’t there fifteen or even ten years ago.
6/15/1963 - Worthington’s big two-week centennial celebration gets underway tomorrow evening with an open air community church service at which beards for men and old fashioned costumes for everyone will be on display.
6/15/1953 - Armstrong County’s refurbished courthouse was dedicated as a “real symbol of freedom in America” at sun drenched ceremonies on the terrace of the building. Harry C. Golden, a member of Armstrong County Historical Society, retold the history of the county courthouse.
6/15/1953 - Kittanning police had a busy Saturday as they made 3 arrests, investigated an accident, recovered a stolen car, and checked on a small fire. In addition, they handled heavy traffic that flowed thru town beforehand, after the courthouse dedication and the Flag Day ceremonies.
6/15/1953 - Ford City- Clyde Barnett, a 59 year old Vandergrift man died when he fell out of a boat into 40 feet of water at Crooked Creek State Park.
6/15/1948 - 1,500 people march in parade. 6 musical units play marching rhythms for colorful Flag Day feature.
6/15/1948 - A new business firm began operation in Kittanning when the Heat Equipment Company, Incorporated opened its place of business at 125 North Jefferson Street.
6/15/1943 - Pastor of Yatesboro Presbyterian Church since January 1939, Reverend S. Lawrence Kurtz has resigned his charge to accept a call to the Harmony-Zelienople Presbyterian Church in Butler County.
6/15/1943 - The Kittanning District experienced its first fatality of the current swimming season when a 16 year old West Kittanning boy drowned in the Allegheny River near the south end of Applewold Borough.
6/15/1938 - Greensburg lawyer Fred R. Trescher told a crowd of several hundred people that they should be jealous of the liberties which the American flag represents, in an address which featured Kittanning’s annual observance of Flag Day.
6/15/1938 - Attorney S. Fred Clark, a prominent Freeport citizen, died at his home on 4th Street in Freeport.
6/15/1933 - Zellers Shuster, an agent for Columbia Natural Gas Company in the Kittanning District, rounded out 50 years of service with the company.
6/15/1933 - Trinity Episcopal Church in Freeport celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. A community parish supper was held at the home of Mrs. Charles Wetzell. The supper was followed by a festival service in the church with the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Reverend Alexander Mann, in charge.
6/15/1928 - Harry D. Shaul, 64, died at his home in Manorville.
6/15/1928 - The 3rd annual reunion and banquet of the Kittanning High School class of 1925 was held at the Alexander Hotel. President Kenneth Campbell acted as toastmaster.
