Historical Headlines - June 14

6/14/1968 - Once again on a split vote, the Armstrong School District directors voted to change the criteria of a modified Master Building Plan based on three high schools instead of improving the existing secondary schools. A new high school would be built at Worthington. The three high schools would be West Hills and Shannock Valley as senior high schools, and Ford City as a junior-senior high school. The existing Worthington High School and Kittanning Junior High School would be converted to an elementary centers. Voting for the resolution were Amberson C. Bauer, Joseph McClaine, Mrs. Frank McNutt Jr., Dr. Donald W. Minteer, W. Joseph Morgan, and J. Fred Sherburne. Negative votes were cast by Mrs. Joseph P. Costanza and Nevin C. Rupert. Director Elzie M. White was not present.

6/14/1968 - The 66-unit Elks-Jaycees Flag Day parade in Kittanning will form near the Indiana Center on North McKean Street, move down to Arch Street, up to North Grant, down Market Street, concluding on Water Street near St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. “Ike” Benton, parade chairman who has managed most of the big Flag Day parades here in the last 20 years, said the units will be in place at 7PM, ready to move when the fire siren blows at 7:30 PM. The parade, traditionally an Elks project, is being co-sponsored by the Jaycees this year as the climax of their first annual Kittanning summer festival. Following the parade at approximately 9:30 PM, the Elks Flag Day ceremonies will be held in the parking lot of the Elks home.

6/14/1963 - A 29 year old Kittanning RD 5 man, Victor Bowser, father of 2, died instantly by electrocution last night whilst helping to move coal mining equipment under wires on Anderson Creek Road, in Valley township.

6/14/1963 - Worthington- All women of the area have been asked to wear bonnets and long dresses to church services Sunday as the Worthington-West Franklin centennial celebration gets underway.

6/14/1958 - Approximately 1/3 of the 175 members of the Kittanning High School class of 1958 are planning to further their education next autumn.

6/14/1958 - Ford City- One of the reasons why bank robbers refuse to operate during the night was revealed yesterday as 2 working men spent 6.5 hours drilling an opening in the vault at the Peoples Bank of Ford City.

6/14/1958 - Freeport- Walter M. Patterson of Freeport, a melting consultant at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation, was elected president of Electric Metal Makers Guild at their 24th annual convention in Cleveland.

6/14/1948 - Kittanning Telephone Company workers are speeding efforts to complete the dial changeover at Rural Valley and meet today’s deadline for installation of the new system.

6/14/1948 - 1,500 people march in parade. 6 musical units play marching rhythms for colorful Flag Day feature.

6/14/1943 - 3 weeks after he had received a medical discharge from the Navy, Nicholas Kuchta, 22, of 612 9th Street in Ford City, was instantly killed when he was struck by a freight train along Pennsylvania railway tracks near Rosston.

6/14/1943 - Wanted- 1,500 donors to Red Cross blood service. Mobile unit coming here week of 19 July to receive blood donations.

6/14/1943 - 2 years after receipt of his commission as a Major in the medical department of the Army, Dr. T. Craig, McKee, a Kittanning physician, will leave Thursday to enter the service.

6/14/1938 - Company C members of Ford City claim they have the only game of badminton in Armstrong County. The company, after engaging in the sport all winter, won recognition for it in the Pennsylvania Guardsmen PNG monthly publication.

6/14/1938 - Roger C. Stone, a Kittanning violinist, entertained the Butler Chapter of Business and Professional Women’s Club with violin solos at the club’s 12th anniversary dinner Monday night.

6/14/1933 - Miss Goldie M. Waltenbaugh, 35, died at her home near Manor Church.

6/14/1933 - Andrew Shaul, a West Penn Power company employee, suffered minor burns from an electric arc which blazed between 2 conductors at Garretts Run Sub Station.

6/14/1928 - Mrs. Katherine Emerson died yesterday at her home on North Grant Avenue.

6/14/1928 - A campaign has been launched to raise $2,500 to rebuild the Homewood Baptist Church in Bethel township. The church was destroyed by a fire on Easter Sunday.
