The West Shamokin varsity girls volleyball team took their first step at a chance for a District 6 title, defeating Tyrone in three straight sets.

In the first set, the Wolves fell behind 7-1 before battling back to tie the game and then finishing off the set on a 9-2 run to earn a 25-17 win.

The second set turned out to have the opposite start as West Shamokin jumped out to 5-0 lead before Tyrone took a time-out. After the time-out Tyrone came out battling, the two teams would trade points until the very end as the Wolves squeezed out a 25-21 win.

The final set was tight at first with 5 ties the whole way until West Shamokin went on a tear in the second half of the set, outscoring Tyrone 13-4 to earn their first round win.

A handful of Wolves were making their playoff debuts and West Shamokin Head Coach Malinda Oesterling said there were a bit of nerves in the beginning, but she was proud of how her team performed.

“I think we were just really nervous. If you look out there we had two freshmen, a couple sophomores, and we had some seniors, but a lot of those girls didn’t have playoff experience. I think it just took a little time to settle in and realize that this is just like another game and we know how to play this,” Oesterling said.

Oesterling complimented Tyrone’s play, saying “It’s nerve racking (being in a close game),Tyrone did a nice job not letting the ball hit the floor. When you’re not use to that, you wonder how your teams going to respond and I think we did great responding tonight.”

The Wolves will be looking to punch their ticket to the semi-finals as they travel to Central Cambria on Tuesday with the start time set for 7:00 PM.
