Local Church Offers Free Meal to Veterans

Veterans are welcome at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for a free meal during the Fort Armstrong Folk Festival.

KITTANNING - St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is inviting veterans to eat for free during the Fort Armstrong Folk Festival.

Jackie Storey-Akins said that although the dinners that will be held in the church’s parish hall are open to the paying public, military veterans are welcome to come and eat at no charge.

“We’re going to honor the veterans this year - active, retired, or anybody that has served with proper ID,” she said. “We want to thank those people who served. (They are the) reason that the churches are here, and the reason that this town’s here - the reason that we are here!”

Akins said that the church will be serving food during the hours that the Festival is open.

“It opens at 6 on Thursday until 10PM, on Friday from 6-10PM, on Saturday from Noon until 10PM, and then on Sunday, we will be there from Noon until 6PM.”

The church is located directly across from Kittanning Riverfront Park on North Water Street adjacent to the property of the former YMCA.

Akins said the concept of honoring veterans developed through personal family members who served or now serve our country.

“To be honest, we have some connections in the military and we have family that is deployed right now and family that is getting ready to deploy. They are some of the guys helping to sponsor the Festival there for us for the church - some of the military that we know. We want to give back and thank those who served.”

Akins said the meal consists of various entrees to choose from and includes dessert and beverage.

“We have different things we are serving - the basics that they have had for years - the cabbage, the noodles, ham bar-be-ques, hot dogs, potato salad, and dessert that the ladies make. We are going to have a kids meal. We are trying to make it more family oriented for people with families to come in. They can come in, eat inside, very reasonably priced. It’s there for everybody but we do want to honor the veterans.”

The Fort Armstrong Folk Festival will run from Thursday, August 3 through Sunday, August 6.
