Kittanning will be without one street worker before the end of this month.
Borough Council voted last night to lay-off one street worker as soon as allowable by union contract.
First Ward Councilman David Croyle made the motion. No employee was named specifically, but rather would be decided by the recent union contract. The latest contract was ratified late last year and is a four-year agreement.
Croyle, in calling for the lay-off, stated that the Borough is not in a financial position to sustain all of its workers during the winter months when the amount of work for street workers is less. He stated the lay-off was for an indefinite period of time.
The street workers are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1515. The union could not be reached for comment prior to press time.
Council members Kim Fox, Gerald Shuster, Chris Schiano, and Wilbur Stitt joined with Croyle in voting for the lay-off. Angelo Turco and Betsy Wilt voted against the motion. Councilman Andy Peters was not at the meeting.
