The West Shamokin Wolves varsity volleyball teams transition from the WPIAL to District 6 and the Heritage Conference went about as well as you can hope for, as the Wolves head to post-season action still undefeated.
This year the playoffs will be much different than the WPIAL format that the Wolves are accustomed to, Head Coach Dan Spencer explains.
“They use a point system (in District 6), so you don’t know if you’re the best team or the fifth best team. The points are split up by wins, classification points, and then there is what they call .700 points. We get four points for a win, then (an additional) one point for a win over a single-A team, two points for a AA win, three points for a AAA win and so on. If the team that you beat finishes with a .700 record or better then you get a couple more points. So they add up those points and the team with the highest points have the highest seed.”
The WPIAL playoffs generally take two weeks to complete, for District 6 however the playoffs take place in one weeks time.
“According to the playoff schedule that we have there will be matches on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and the final will be on Saturday the following week. There’s a good chance we will draw a bye on Monday, meaning we would just play Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. In some ways that’s a normal volleyball week when you’re going to tournaments,” Spencer explained.
One positive aspect of District 6 is that if the Wolves are the top seeded team they will be able to host every match up until the championship game which will be played at Altoona.
The Wolves will play their final regular season game on Tuesday at Northern Cambria.
