The West Shamokin Wolves varsity girls volleyball team put together another win Monday night on their home court to improve to 3-0 on the early season.

It was more of the same for West Shamokin, who is coming off of two 3-0 sweeps against Marion Center to open the regular season and most recently away at United.

Overall this was a solid team performance from West Shamokin as they defeated Blairsville in three sets by the scores of 25-15, 25-9, and 25-15. So far in this young season, the Wolves haven’t lost a set.

The Wolves won, but a great coach never gets too high, and West Shamokin’s Head Coach Dan Spencer is a great coach of volleyball. He saw a few things that could be improved, but overall he was happy with his teams performance.

“I thought there were too many points that we didn’t make them (Blairsville) earn that we simply said have one (point). You can only give so many (points) away before finally somebody says okay, takes them, and double with their own.”

The loud and proud West Shamokin student section known as the “black hole” was not wearing much black; instead they came decked out in red, white, and blue for what the students called America night Monday evening when the Wolves faced off against Blairsville.

“Fortunately, we are able to do enough good things, and I do think we did a lot of good things (Monday), but I just thought we did too many bad things and that’s what happens when you’re trying to put it together. We are still early in the season yet, so we will see where we end up,” Spencer said.

West Shamokin gave Blairvsille touble all night and that could be partially attributed to the very patriotic “black hole” student section, which this week found themselves not decked out in the silver and black of West Shamokin, but instead sporting the red, white, and blue.

West Shamokin varsity soccer goalie and black hole participant Sam Skamai explained how the patriotic idea came to be.

“One day after the first volleyball game, we decided we wanted to keep the black hole, which is our student section going. So Mike Spera and Trent Tedesco had a wonderful idea of America night,” Skamai explained.

There were a couple standouts from the game for West Shamokin, including senior Katie Glover who had the game point in the second and third sets to notch another win for the Wolves along with a team high 14 kills.

Dan Spencer went on to say about his senior standout, “she’s worth an awful lot to tell you the truth. How can you avoid using her cannon? You gotta fire that cannon and she fires it. She was pretty good tonight.”

First year setter Olivia Fusaro led the team in assists with 18 and she did a great job serving the ball, earning a total of 22 serves throughout the game to lead the team.

Another player who impressed Spencer was freshman Riley Prugh, who played so well Spencer just couldn’t take her out.

“She really had a good night, I bet she didn’t have a hitting error the whole way across there and it was pretty impressive. I was pleased with what she did. She’s not real big, but she’s real effective. She passes well, she plays the floor well, so I think it was a good night for the freshman,” said Spencer.

The Wolves will look to continue their winning ways Tuesday the 13th when they travel to Penns Manor before heading out to Derry Area to participate in their tournament.
