Armstrong Receives Grant Again for School Security

Armstrong School District Superintendent Chris DeVivo announced Armstrong will once again receive a state grant to help provide security in the local schools.

A State grant will continue to allow a local security firm to secure Armstrong School District hallways through June 2017.

Armstrong School District Superintendent Chris DeVivo announced this week that Armstrong once again received a portion of the statewide $3.9 million targeted grant program for school police or resource officers.

Student Transportation, Child Accounting and Safe Schools Director Jon Fair explained the school district will receive $40,000 during the 2015-16 school year and a $20,000 match next school year.

“Basically, over two years, it’s $60,000,” Fair said.

The grant is similar to what was received in January 2014. A contract with Armstrong Lock and Security of Kittanning was first signed the next month and has been continuous since.

According to the original application requirements, grantees had to be willing to fund the second year regardless.

“It was a competitive grant – we had to apply against all the other districts in the State,” Fair said. “We were fortunate to get that.”

In addition to Armstrong, Apollo-Ridge and Leechburg Area School Districts also received grant funding. Freeport Area School District received $20,000 during the second year of their grant agreement.

However, unlike two years ago, Armstrong did not receive Safe Schools Targeted Grant funding.

Armstrong School District utilized the $25,000 in the past to purchase new security camera encoders for Elderton and Shannock Valley Elementary schools.

“Unfortunately, less than half (of the school districts) that applied got (the Safe Schools Targeted Grant). I talked with some of the surrounding districts and none of them received it, either,” Fair said.

No Armstrong County school districts received the Safe Schools Targeted Grant for programming or equipment upgrades.
