About a half-hour before the first Armstrong Junior and Senior High bands were taking the stage for their first holiday concerts, traffic was slowed at the Buffington Drive intersection by a two-vehicle accident.
Manor Township Fire Chief Chad Evans explained that, at about 6:25PM, the driver of a yellow Jeep Wrangler Sport was turning left from Business Route 422 onto Buffington Drive to coincidentally drop off a student, but turned in front of an oncoming black Jeep Patriot – which was traveling straight toward Indiana.
“(The Wrangler driver) thought he had the green arrow and kept (driving),” Chief Evans said.
Both drivers’ side airbags deployed in the damaged vehicles and they both sustained crippling damage, but dispatched Kittanning Township firefighters and Kittanning #6 Ambulance technicians were put “back-in-service” when they arrived on-scene.
“There were no injuries and no entrapment,” Chief Evans said. “(Kittanning Township’s) primary role with us during an accident is with a rescue truck.”
Mohney’s Towing had to tow both vehicles from the scene – requiring ‘Indiana Pike’ traffic to be blocked. However, it only took technicians minutes to load the damaged vehicles and open up the roadway to monitored traffic.
Firefighters did have to re-post a ‘Stop Here on Red’ traffic sign at the intersection corner.
Emergency crews were on-scene until about 7:15PM.
The Pennsylvania State Police report detailing the incident and giving identifications of the drivers has not yet been released.

That light is a game for many motorists. Many times I’m in the left lane to drive thru and at the last moment I’ve had cars fly past me on the right side and swerve in front of me to get through the light before it changes or playing their version of chicken. I have also witnessed kids during dismissal fly out and through the red light and looking back at cars/friends behind laughing that they made it.
