Camera Used to Examine Sink Hole in Kittanning
(Above) Workers from Kittanning Borough, the Kittanning Municipal Authority, Senate Engineering, and M&B Services pull out a special camera that was used to video the inside of a gigantic hole under the intersection of Market and South Water Streets.
The hole is huge - as deep as 8 feet and over 4 feet wide - on the South Water Street side of the Citizens Bridge intersection.
History: In the early 1920’s, the former wooden plank bridge was moved upstream to allow the current bridge to be built. Huge timber and wooden blocks were installed that stabilized the work. When it was completed, the timber was covered up and left intact. Meanwhile, almost 100 years later, most of that wood has decayed.
That is one possible account for why a large voided area exists under the roadway.
Other possible reasons are sanitary and storm lines that were damaged and deteriorated over the years.
At the end of today, the reason may be clearer as the data is analyzed by engineers.
This story will be updated as information becomes available. Also David Croyle will have complete details tonight at 8PM on Talk of the Town on Family-Life TV
A video technician controls the camera as it is maneuvered in the hole beneath the road surface on South Water Street in Kittanning.
