The ‘Drugs Kill Dreams’ drug prevention program has reached students across the county during the past 15 years.
But, now a recent grant award could help District Magisterial Judge Gary DeComo and other community leaders spread the message even more.
The Richard G. Snyder YMCA in Kittanning was awarded a $10,000 grant from The Office of Attorney General (OAG) Community Drug Abuse Prevention Grant Program to help fund the drug prevention program’s anniversary campaign, “15 Years of Dreams Secured - Kickin` in Up for 15 More.”
The Drugs Kill Dreams 15th Anniversary Campaign was selected to receive this grant based on the demonstrated value of the program, support of community leaders, and the OAG’s assessment that the program is likely to produce measurable success in our community.
Judge DeComo, along with YMCA, Armstrong School District and other community officials, plan to build on the existing ‘Drugs Kill Dreams’ infrastructure to provide additional opportunities for local youth to be exposed to prevention messages and understand the perils of drug abuse.
Plans already in-place include a year-long County proclamation, celebrity sports memorabilia donated to raffles to those students who pledge to remain drug free and during the YMCA’S summer day camps.
Richard G. Snyder YMCA Board President Stan Berdell called the drug prevention program “a staple for drug abuse prevention.”
“We feel that students have received invaluable information and positive persuasion that has helped them make smart choices in regard to illegal drug use,” Berdell said in a statement.
“The YMCA is thrilled to have received grant funding from the Office of Attorney General in support of the Drugs Kill Dreams year-long program. This funding decision affirms that the Y is not just a gym, but a community resource that walks the talk of Social Responsibility, Youth Development and Healthy Living.”
