BUFFONE: Crosby Put on IR, Return in Question

by John Buffone

While the Pittsburgh Penguins are gearing up for their season opener tomorrow, they’ll be doing so without center Sidney Crosby in their plans. The Penguins’ captain was placed on the injured reserve list earlier this week and will have to miss at least the first week of the season. Given that Crosby has yet to be cleared for contact however, it’d be easy to assume that Crosby will be out longer than seven days. The former MVP has been skating with the team since the beginning of training camp in non-contact drills. Crosby suffered a serious concussion last January when Tampa Bay defenseman Victor Hedman pushed him in the back causing his face to hit the boards. Although the Hedman hit is the one being labeled as the concussion shot, a headshot by Washington’s Dave Steckel days before in the Winter Classic appeared to be much more violent and likely to cause injury. The puck drops for the Pens opener tomorrow at 10:00 pm at Vancouver.
