The Armstrong County Commissioners reviewed bids for some work that is planned to be done on the retaining walls and front stairs of the Armstrong County Courthouse during a public meeting held yesterday afternoon.
“Anybody that has taken a look at the wall can tell that it has moved significantly since this pretty rough winter,” said Commissioner Jim Scahill. “It has moved, and it is moving from the bottom now. We’re never going to make it through another winter, so we have to do this.”
According to Roy Carney, Director of Armstrong County Public Works, the wall and front steps may become a hazard to pedestrians in the future. The project will impact most of the Courthouse’s departments. Bids for the work are going to be reviewed, and the job will be awarded during the Commissioners’ next public meeting to be held on May 6.
“We will be anticipating the award of that bid at the next public meeting,” said Commissioner Patricia Kirkpatrick. “We are drafting a plan for entrance into the courthouse because parking is going to significantly change and also your entrance and egress out of the courthouse. We’re going to make the public aware when that will begin. So, there is a lot more to anticipate in the next few months regarding this project. It’s not just about awarding the bid, but there are also major issues about getting people moved through the buildings.”
