Historical Headlines - October 18

10/18/1969 – Two men were killed and two others injured in a violent car crash early today on Butler Road, Route 422, near Worthington. Victims were Fred Zorb, Jr., 23, of Butler, and driver Frederick J. Van Dyke, 22, of Freeport. Hospitalized was Thomas Guidotti, 23, of Butler. Treated and released was Robert Hancock, 21, of Butler. The car was traveling west at about 3:15 AM when it left the highway, ripped out 13 guard posts, plunged over an embankment, and rolled onto its roof. The car may have reached a speed of 110 mph at the time of the crash.

10/18/1969 - Diane Burns, Carol Schrecengost and Cindy Kerry appeared in front page photos today as the homecoming queens of Kittanning, Shannock Valley and Freeport High Schools.

10/18/1969 – A dinner celebration was held for the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Harold C. Graham, Kittanning RD1. The event, given by the couple’s son Edwin, daughter Linda, and daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Gerald Elgia, was prepared and served by the Kittanning Township Auxiliary at Shay Grange Hall.

10/18/1969 - In a “Letter to the Editor” today, Emma H. Calhoun praised the “beautiful rolling hills and well-kept homes and surroundings” of Armstrong County and thanked the hospital staff for the “Beautiful birthday cake, not only nice but good” which was given to her during her stay in the hospital here.

10/18/1969 - In another letter, Priscilla Brown complained about the rowdy behavior of children at a Country Caravan and Wild West Show held at Bel-Mont Arena. The children “threw paper and popcorn, yelled, whistled and booed,” she said.

10/18/1954 - Leader-Times Sports Editor Larry Karl was headed for Durham, N.C. and homecoming at Duke University Friday as Hurricane Hazel bound northward across the Carolinas and Virginia. He and Mrs. Karl were south of Front Royal, Va., when Hazel changed course to cross their path.

10/18/1954 - The Rev. William Miles Bayle’s acceptance of a call to become rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church here was announced to the congregation.

10/18/1949 - A wave of automobile looting hit Kittanning over the weekend, borough police said today. Three cars were broken into last Saturday night or early Sunday. Another car burglary was believed to have taken place at the same time.

10/18/1944 - All four Kittanning voting precincts are Republican in registration by large margins, registration figures in the courthouse show. Total registration figures for the county were announced last week, with the Republicans leading by more than 10,000 names.

10/18/1944 - Lt. Kelvin H. Pierce, husband of Helen Winslow Pierce of Dayton, has been reported missing in action over Germany since Sept. 28. He was co-piloting a Flying Fortress at the time.

10/18/1939 - Forty Armstrong County enrollees make up the newest contingent sent out from the Department of Public Assistance offices here to the Civilian Conservation Corps.

10/18/1939 - Leah Martin, subbing today as a clerk in the Dentici grocery store on Union Avenue while the Michael Dentici family made preparations for a family wedding, had her day livened by Kittanning’s first armed robbery in nearly five years.

10/18/1934 - Mrs. George Lindsay, vice president of the Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers will be at Ford City Public School auditorium to assist in organizing a Parent-Teacher Association at Ford City.

10/18/1934 - A reception was held at Grace Lutheran Church, Manorville, in honor of the new pastor, the Rev. Elmer F. Rice, D.D., who accepted a call to Manorville, Rupp and Heilman Lutheran Churches.

10/18/1934 - Kittanning now boasts another musical organization in Jack Hill and his orchestra. They have been booked for an appearance at the Columbia Theatre.

10/18/1929 - Ford City High’s football team won a decisive victory over Shadyside High yesterday, 20-6.
