Historical Headlines - September 6

09/06/1969 – Members of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kittanning are looking forward to tomorrow when they will hear for the first time their rebuilt historic tracker action organ. The rebuilding and tonal improvement project cost $6,000. Dr. Robert Thurau, pastor, said that all the money was available through an organ fun to which members had been contributing over the years when it became apparent that some day the work would have to be done. Present replacement value of the organ would be more than $30,000. Work began June 1 when it was dismantled and trucked to the factory.

09/06/1969 - A project entitled Meals on Wheels (meals for shut-ins) will be discussed at the next dinner-meeting of the Business and Professional Woman’s Club.

09/06/1969 - Some 500 trailers are parked at Crooked Creek State Park this weekend for the 6th annual camp-out of Teepee Chapter, National Campers and Hikers Association.

09/06/1969 - Gov. Raymond Shafer and Lt. Gov. Raymond Broderick are starting a golf weekend at Kittanning today as guests of Sen. Albert R. Pechan. Also guests of Pechan for the member guest tournament at Kittanning Country Club are 30 state seniors and other officials.

09/06/1969 – Livestock sold through Belnap Auction near Dayton last year totaled 27,962 head, according to the State Agriculture Department’s Bureau of Animal Industry. The number is slightly lower than 1967’s total of 28,690.

09/06/1949 - No serious injuries were reported on Armstrong County highways over the weekend as seven accidents involving 15 vehicles piled up approximately $1,420 damage.

09/06/1949 - Arthur Mattax was elected superintendent of the Sunday School by teachers and officers of St. John’s Lutheran Church at a recent meeting. Retiring superintendent is J. George Brown, who will devote full time to teaching the Martin Luther Bible Class.

09/06/1944 - Fifty-five members of old Company K, a World War I fighting unit, and their guests were present at an annual reunion Saturday at the Pony Farm.

09/06/1944 - Kittanning public schools began the 1944-45 term on Tuesday with an almost normal enrollment of approximately 1,420 students in high school, 30 in Central grade school and 29 in Fourth Ward grades.

09/06/1939 - McGrann fire truck, operated by Bruce Baird of McGrann, was lightly damaged in an accident Labor Day afternoon on Route 66 in Manorville.

09/06/1939 - Kroger Grocery and Baking Company’s new super self-service market, on Market Street here, will open to the public at noon Thursday.

09/06/1934 - A joyful golden wedding anniversary celebration, including dinner and entertainment attended by 90 persons, was held Sunday. The event marked the 50 years of married life of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Donello, well-known Leechburg residents.

09/06/1934 - With completion of the foundations, basement walls and concrete piers for the new Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, Henry Shaffer Lumber Company had part of its crew of workmen busy today excavating that portion of the basement from which dirt had not already been moved.

09/06/1929 - Freeport public schools opened Tuesday morning with a total enrollment of 711. The total included 429 in the grades and 282 in the high school.

09/06/1929 - While local people sweltered in the heat today, the weather man reported it was snowing in Wyoming.
