08/30/1969 – Today marked the 100th Anniversary of the founding of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ on North McKean Street in Kittanning. The Rev. Richard H. Taylor will lead a special prayer vigil service beginning at noon and ending at 3PM. Members and friends will pray for the power of God to lead the congregation in new and vital ministries as the Church looks toward the future. At its chartering, the church had 25 members.

08/30/1969 – Six people were injured in a two-car accident on Route 839, three miles south of Dayton last night around 10PM. A car driven by Garry Lee Dinger, 22, of Dayton, apparently traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed over the center of the highway and struck another auto driven by Kenneth Moore, 49, of Kittanning RD5, then struck an embankment. Admitted to the Kittanning hospital were Mary Moore, 22, and Wendy Moore, 18 months old. Kenneth Moore was transferred to Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh. Others treated were Kenneth Moore Jr, four months old, and Bonnie Rumbaugh, 9.

08/30/1969 – Shannock Valley Police are investigating the theft of approximately ten cases of beer from Shannock Valley Distributors in Yatesboro. Owner Tom Piscolich said the theft was made after 3AM by an intruder cutting the glass window.

08/30/1969 – Kindergarten students mentioned in the paper today: Spider collector Joel Steindel plans to take his bugs to Kindergarten. His mother, Mrs. Richard Steindel, worries about him crossing streets. Meanwhile, Mrs. Kenneth Nelson of Kittanning will lose a helper when her daughter, Tracy Lynn, starts school. Her sister, two-year-old Karen, will have a while to wait before she goes to school.

08/30/1969 – Tarrtown captured the Shaughnessy playoff championship of the Tri-County Baseball League by taking out a 5-4 victory over Freeport on Freeport High School field.

08/30/1969 – Diplomas were given last night to 110 firemen who completed a week-long fire training school at the Armstrong .County Firemen’s headquarters along Route 66 near Crooked Creek.

08/30/1969 – Three area women were awarded master’s degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania during commencement exercises at the school. They are Mrs. Ronald (Mary) Shaffer of Ford City, Miss Linda K. Kenner of Fairmount City, and Mrs. Joseph Abate Petruzzi of Kittanning MR 10.

08/30/1969 – A mew St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Brady’s Bend is being constructed next to the old building. The new church is expected to be completed in late October. The church as 225 member families.

08/30/1959 - Kittanning First Presbyterian Church will mark its 137th birthday. It was formally organized August 31, 1822. Presbyterians have been holding services here, however, since June of 1806.

08/30/1959 – Harriet Fay Kronen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Kronen, Kittanning RD4, has completed nine weeks of basic training at Recruit Training Women, US Naval Training Center, in Bainbridge, MD.

08/30/1954 – The vanguard of over 20,000 Armstrong County public school students will enter class Wednesday for the start of the 1954-55 school term. Awaiting many of the pupils are brand new school buildings, with others scheduled for completion during the school year.

08/30/1949 – Kittanning Firemen’s Community Band will make its first home appearance tonight with a concert t the riverfront park.

08/30/1949 – A Ford City RD 1 farmer, Harold Heilman, suffered contusions of the chest and bruises when a bull pinned him against a wall this morning in a barn on the Iseman Brothers farm.

08/30/1949 – An annual census shows a decline in the number of schoolage children in each ward of Kittanning, schools superintendent Ned Culler announced.

08/30/1949 – Chamber of Commerce officials were searching for a structure suitable for the needs of a uniform maker. The company, which would employ up to 200 women, reported ready to come to Kittanning if a building could be found.

08/30/1944 - Armstrong County election board had mailed 4434 military ballots up to noon today, to county residents in the armed forces and auxiliary organizations. Some 1125 ballots remain to be airmailed to all points of the world before the deadline at noon Saturday.

08/30/1944 - A military service roll at the Kittanning riverfront park will be dedicated tonight.

08/30/1939 – No change was reported at Hospital here in the condition of Clarence Claypoole, 34-year-old Worthington man who suffered head injuries in an accident at the Hindman limestone plant near Worthington.

08/30/1939 - The Rev. Sarkis Papajian, pastor of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, headlined speech-makers at the 41st assembly of Armstrong County’s largest family - the Bowsers - at Buffalo Valley Park yesterday.

08/30/1934 – Mrs. Elizabeth F. Willard, 66 died yesterday afternoon at her home on South McKean Street after a lingering illness.

08/30/1934 - Work is progressing on construction of a new water plant which will serve West Kittanning.

08/30/1929 - Fire caused a loss estimated at between $60,000 and $70,000 Tuesday at the Karns City plant of Star Light Refining Company. The blaze spread after an explosion.

08/30/1929 - Edith, 13-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Booher of Center Hill, died in a Pittsburgh Hospital.

08/30/1929 - Fire last night destroyed Riggle schoolhouse, near Brick Church.
