Council Vice-President Tyson Klukan said money to pay for special valves to keep Ford City from flooding will be paid for through a flood mitigation grant. Ford City will replace five of ten valves this year.
Ford City Borough Ford City Borough is on its way to being one of the safest communities if the Allegheny River reaches flood stage. Council last night approved spending $220,200 for flood control valves.
“We have been talking for some time about the Tyflex valves that are to be installed along the riverfront at the outfalls to reduce the backflow into the borough,” said Council President Carol Fenyes.
She said that a big opening last Friday had Marion Hill Associates of New Brighton, PA as the low bidder at $220,200. The only other bidder, Three Rivers Diving, LLC, of Canonsburg, PA, bid $435,000.
Checkmate Ultraflex Slip-inline Check valves will be installed at the following outfalls: 5th Avenue, south of 3rd Street; off 2nd Avenue and 8th Street; on 2nd Avenue between 11th & 12th Streets; 2nd Avenue between 13th & 14th Streets; and 2nd Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets.
Council Vice-President Tyson Klukan said the cost will be covered by a grant.
“The total flood mitigation grant was $315,000,” Klukan said. “This portion will be fully funded by the grant.”
Klukan said there is a grant matching requirement, but that previous work will count toward the borough’s portion of the match.
“We did some work on the lower pump yard prior to (this work), so Borough Council will be trying to recoup some additional funding from the work we already did down in the lower pump yard with grants as well,” he said.
Fenyes agreed.
“We got a letter of no-prejudice against that contract early on so we would be able to backtrack on some of the funds that we have already spent on the contract,” she said.
