07/23/1969 - Kittanning and Apollo golfers shared honors in the Kittanning Country Club Ladies Invitation Day yesterday with scores of 87.

07/23/1969 – West Kittanning was a cow pasture when Calvin Dunmire began his lumber company in 1909. While four other lumber companies in the area folded during the depression before WWI, Dunmire kept his little office open. He now celebrates his 60th year in operation through three generations that included his son, Paul Dunmire (who took over in the late 1920s, and C. E. “Ed” Dunmire. Ed’s son, 5-year-old Andrew Dunmire, was also attending the open house.

07/23/1969 - Mrs. Mildred Thomas, owner-manager of the Boarding Home for the Aged, Main St., Worthington, and Mrs. Edna Shotts of 107 Justice Lane, Kittanning, are on a sight-seeing trip to Europe.

07/23/1969 - The third concert of the summer season will be presented Thursday evening by the Kittanning Firemen’s Concert Band at the James V. Colonna bandshell in Kittanning. This concert is presented through Kittanning Borough Council and through the recording fund of the American Federation of Musicians. A concert by the band two weeks ago drew a crowd estimated at more than 300.

07/23/1969 – Freeport councilman and Republican mayoral candidate Roger Ruppersberger, 58, faces a hearing before Justice of the Peace Gene Showers on charges of assault and battery of a police officer and violation of Borough Ordinance 102. The alleged incident occurred at 2AM yesterday at the Pizza Palace on Fifth Street.

07/23/1964 - Grace Guthrie of Kittanning RD 2 was chosen winner at the beauty contest sponsored last evening by Rayburn Township Fire Department. Miss Guthrie who makes her home with Mrs. Norman Staley, was awarded $15 and a bouquet of roses.

07/23/1959 - West Kittanning firemen will hold their annual carnival next week on the West Kittanning Veterans Memorial Field.

07/23/1959 - More than 160 children are taking part in Armstrong County YMCA’s first annual learn-to-swim campaign which started this week.

07/23/1959 - Kittanning street signs have been replaced. The total cost of 119 new brackets, 12 new poles and approximately 468 signs was $1,039.86. North Grant Avenue required the most signs - 38.

07/23/1954 - John McCoy, a science instructor at Leechburg High School for the past 25 years, assumed duties of supervising principal of Worthington - West Franklin Township Schools.

07/23/1949 - The new 40-hour work week scheduled to go into effect Sept. 1 will close the Pennsylvania Railroad station here two days a week. The freight station here will definitely be closed Saturday, Sunday and holidays said J. A. Kennedy, Kittanning agent.

07/23/1949 - Over 3,000 Added to County Vote Lists, Court-house Jammed During Morning as Registering Closes. Special Congressional Election and Bonus Question Arouses Interest in Franchise.

07/23/1934 - The mercury backed off Sunday to a high of 95 degrees here after residents had wilted and crops withered under the most excruciating heat of the summer. Saturday’s high temperature of 110 degrees, registered at noon, was not equalled Sunday, and a slight breeze stirred to make for generally more comfortable weather.

07/23/1934 - Approximately 300 postal employes and their wives will be in Kittanning early next month when postal employes of the 27th Congressional district - Armstrong, Cambria, Indiana and Jefferson counties - meet here.
