07/03/1969 - Henry Livengood of 888 N. Grant Ave., Kittanning, was installed as president of the Greater Kittanning Jaycees, at the organization’s dinner held Monday evening at Morda’s Dining Room, Kittanning RD 5.

07/03/1969 - A total of 51 traffic accidents were investigated by troopers from the Kittanning substation of Pennsylvania State Police during June, according to Joseph A. Sasala, substation commander.

07/03/1969 - Area farmers can joke about the old saying “corn knee-high by the Fourth of July” this year. Armstrong County farm agent William R. King re-words the statement to waist-high and even head-high in some areas of the county.

07/03/1964 - Navy Ensign Andre V. Volek, son of Mrs. Mary A. Volek of Kittanning RD 7, was designated a naval aviator and received his wings of gold June 5 at the Navy Auxiliary Air Station in New Iberia, La. He completed his first training by qualifying with eight landings aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. A graduate of Pennsylvania State College at New Castle, Volek entered the service in December of 1961.

07/03/1959 - Mr. and Mrs. W. Ben Brown have announced the sale of their grocery business at 1304-5th Ave., Ford City. The Browns will make their home in St. Petersburg, Fla.

07/03/1959 - Hi-Lander Restaurant will be inscribed on the new sign to be hung over the former Jordan and Claypoole’s Restaurant, Kittanning MR 10. The restaurant is under the management of Mrs. Marjorie Toy of Worthington.

07/03/1969 – A former Adrian man, Roy E. Lash, has received his master’s degree in public health from Columbia University School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine. Lash is a graduate of East Brady High School, Clarion State Teachers College, and attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary. During the summer and fall of 1964, he served as a student pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kittanning. He is the son of Mrs. Lottie Lash of Adrian and the late Pfc. Earl W. Lash. He is grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Ira R. McAuley and L. Ralph Lash Sr, all of Adrian.

07/03/1969 – Love for wild animals has started two men on a project which may bring the Kittanning area a zoo, park, and animal museum. A rare Kodiak bear, an African lion, and a golden eagle are just around the corner at Kittanning RD1. Carl Smail has brought scores of Rocky Mountain animals to the area and their project is barely underway. A 50-acre park with a zoo full of wild animals in their natural habitat (not cages) and a museum displaying stuffed animals and educational material are planned hopefully to be open to the public by next spring. Smail works for the Armstrong School District and is a game warden.

07/03/1969 – Treasure Lake in DuBois is scheduled to hold a grand opening this weekend. Lots start at $3,995.

07/03/1969 – Many of the 11,000 workers at the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp’s Pittsburgh Works began applying for unemployment compensation today following shutdown of the facility. J&L began a temporary closure following a wildcat strike by 850 workers in the open hearth department. When union workers voted to remain off the job ignoring a directive by the United Steelworkers international headquarters, J&L shut down the plant.

07/03/1954 - Harry Edgar George, 32, of Vandergrift, husband of Ford City native, Mary Mikula, was killed early this morning near Harrisburg when his auto rammed into a guard rail as he drove to his home for the holiday weekend.

07/03/1954 – Kittanning area midget baseball teams are playing on a brand new field this summer. The Little League organization has moved to Linde Air property at the south end of Applewold. One of the most modern fields in Western Pennsylvania was constructed on the cross-river site this Spring.

07/03/1944 - Ford City relatives received the news this week that S-Sgt. Joseph Klaput, who was listed missing in action over Germany since May 12, is a German prisoner of war. His twin brother, S-Sgt. George Klaput, still is stationed in England.

07/03/1944 - The Allegheny River claimed another victim on Sunday when George Allen Reed, 33, of 138 Queen St., Kittanning, was drowned about 4 o’clock two miles above East Brady. His two companions, Leo Titus of South Water St. and George Wagner of 104 Rebecca St., narrowly escaped a similar fate when the boat from which they were fishing began to sink.

07/03/1939 - A parade and speaking program in the morning and a night-time fireworks display will culminate the four-day community-wide Independence Day celebration at Ford City.

07/03/1939 - The Rev. Leo J. T. Chrzanowski, known as Father Leo here these many years, was honored by parishioners of St. Francis de Paul’s Roman Catholic Church at a dinner in the church basement to mark the 20th anniversary of his ordination.

07/03/1939 - Armstrong County has been assigned a .quota of 50 of the 5,629 unemployed Pennsylvania youths to be enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, it was announced today by Secretary of Public Assistance Howard L. Russell.

07/03/1934 - Swimming enthusiasts learned today of the planned reopening of the Polliwog Swimming Club at Gates’ Pool, under the direction of Miss Ann Bonstein of Rebecca St. Miss Bonstein recently returned from Danville, Ill., where she is director of physical education for girls in the high school.

07/03/1929 - Edward Ashe, 70, well-known resident of Dayton, was found dead at work this morning.
