1/18/1969 – Kenneth Gray, 57, of Kittanning RD2, was traveling south approximately four miles north of Kittanning, when a rear spring broke causing it to collide with a northbound truck driven by Meade E. Shaffer, 22, of Adrian RD1. No one was injured.

1/18/1969 – Rayburn Township Beagle Club has moved to Manor Township and a larger site. The club recently purchased and leased 110 acres of land designated for training beagle dogs in Stitt Holly Road, 3 miles from Ford City. The prior location for the organization was in East Franklin Township, and the move is hoped to attract new membership from persons living on the east side of the Allegheny River. In addition to land, the club has a building it is remodeling. Some 40 acres was purchased from August Valasek of Pleasantview Drive, Ford Cliff and about 70 acres was leased from Richard Iseman of Manor Township.

1/18/1969 – Two persons were injured in head-on crash of two cars on East Kittanning Hill. A car operated by George P. Novasell, 46, of Kittanning RD6, traveling north near the Kittanning court house, crossed the center line and struck a car driven by Woody Murtland, 37, of 1416 Orr Avenue, Kittanning. Novasell and passenger Terry Murtland, 12, were treated at the hospital and released.

1/18/1969 – Rev. R. Paul Beatty, pastor since 1959 at Worthington United Presbyterian Church, offered his resignation at the annual church meeting, effective January 30. He will assume duties at the New Florence and West Fairfield congregations of Redstone, Westmoreland County. Prior to Worthington, Rev. Beatty served a church at Elderton.

1/18/1969 – Lloyd Voss, defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be the guest speaker tonight at the Football-Golf Banquet sponsored by the Kittanning Mothers Athletic Club.

1/18/1969 – Furnace Run Union Chapel, Kittanning RD3, will observe its 55th anniversary tomorrow with special music and services at 10 and 11AM. A brief history of the church, which began as a Sunday School in 1914, and was established as a congregation in 1954, will be given by the Rev. John Moore, former superintendent, missionary, and pastor. The sermon will be given by the Rev. Richard Emery of Reynoldsville. He and his family and other special guests will also provide music. All former members of the church are invited to attend these special services, Mr. Moore said, along with the present congregation and any prospective members.

1/18/1964 – The man who coached Ford City High School basketball teams at the start of a long list of sectional championships, Abraham Jacob Sheridan, 77, of Middleburg, died at 5:55 PM yesterday.

1/18/1964 – A vacancy of long standing in the Armstrong County Public schools system will soon be filled. Supervisor of Special Education in the system, C. Eugene Hampton, said today that William J. Covielto of Pittsburgh has been hired as Supervisor of Speech and Hearing.

1/18/1954 – Kittanning firemen made a run in below-zero temperatures when fire was discovered at the Krautbauer Glass and Paint Store on South Jefferson Street. The fire evidently started when paper near a built-in floor heater caught fire.

1/18/1954 – Free movies were shown to children of Ford City and vicinity at the Glassworkers Union building. The movies are part of the union’s community recreation program.

1/18/1949 – Returning home from a store where she had gone for a bottle of milk, Peggy McLaughlin, young daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William McLaughlin, fell. The back of her arm was cut so badly that eight stitches were required to close the wound.

1/18/1949 – Funeral services were held for infant triplets born to Mr. & Mrs. James Shaffer of Kittanning RD1.

1/18/1944 – Volunteers Open Fourth Ward Loan Drive, Greatest Emphasis Being Placed on Sales of Series “E” Securities.

1/18/1944 – “Frozen fog” resulted in the most unusual weather of the current winter season.

1/18/1944 – The Home Nursing Committee Red Cross chapter, preparing for early opening of a new class in Home Nursing here, urged at least one person from every family to enroll for the course.

1/18/1939 – Miss Minnie Bellas, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Bellas of Troy Hill, is in the hospital as a result of the district’s first severe coasting accident. While climbing Troy Hill near the new schoolhouse, the girl was struck down by a heavy bobsled on which the injured girl’s brother, Francis, was riding.

1/18/1939 – Friday the 13th proved disastrous to the Ernest Lasher family of Adrian, when fire of undetermined origin leveled a six-room cottage and menaced the R. E. Lasher service station nearby.

1/18/1934 – Mr. & Mrs. J. G. Ross quietly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Boggsville.

1/18/1934 – Peer Dunmire, 83, one of Armstrong County’s oldest residents, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ira Swank, of Burrell Township.

1/18/1929 – An electrical man, “Televox,” entertained Kiwanis members and their guests at the Lutheran parish house.

1/18/1929 – A 15-year-old Ford City boy was killed when an automobile struck the sled on which he was riding.
