1/17/1969 – Firemen from Rayburn and Kittanning #6 fought a blaze and smoke that destroyed the Melford Norton Jr. home near Routes 422 and 66 intersection in Edgewood his morning. The fire had already taken its toll when firemen arrived and the Nortons, not at home, lost everything.
1/17/1969 – Former postmaster of the Mahoning post office, Mrs. Mary Belle Lingler, said the town was not always called Mahoning. The name of the town was Orrsville when the post office was established May 7, 1838, according to her records. The name of the post office was changed to Mahoning on March 13, 1874, according to records from the Office of National Archives, Washington, DC. The mail came from Kittanning by mail train in the early days. Mrs. Lingler served as postmaster from May 11, 1948 until it closed on December 27, 1968.
1/17/1969 – No injuries were reported when a loaded school bus driven by Gay Bowser, Jr., 25, of Kittanning RD1, skidded on ice at 11th Street, Ford City, and struck a parked car which was pushed into another parked vehicle. Bowser was making a right turn from 5th Avenue onto 11th Street. The road was was icy and the buss skidded into a parked car belonging to Wallace and Edna Tylinski of 11th Street, Ford City. The parked car was pushed into another parked vehicle owned by the same couple.
1/17/1969 – Twelve members of Sunday School classes at the Gosford Union Chapel, Kittanning RD2, were presented last Sunday with pins for perfect attendance in 1968. Presenting the pins was Ray Wolfe, assistant superintendent of the school. Those receiving pins and their years of perfect attendance: Paul Shaffer, superintendent, 20 years; Mrs. Jean Mechling, 12; Mrs. Caroline Bright, 8; Rick Lamison, 8; Mrs. Sarah Wolfe, 7; Mrs. Wanda Wonderling, 6; Vickie Lamison, 5; Mrs. Maria Mechling, 4; Leslie Mechling, 4; Kathie Mechling, 3; Mrs. Mary Lamison, 1; Kim Mechling, 1. The Rev. Harry E. Fink is missionary pastor of the church.
1/17/1969 – Perfect attendance pins were awarded to 14 members of the Salem United Church of Christ during the Sunday School devotional period this week. Mrs. Blair Cogley and Cindy and Rodger McKinley were presented with Bibles for completing five years of perfect attendance. Other awards went to Lorraine Steim, 17 years perfect attendance; Mrs. Elizabeth Rosenberger, 10; Paula Jo Geidel, 9; Dorothy Ridenour, 8; Janice Cable, 7; Mrs. Eunice Schingary, 6; Betty Hill, 4; Mrs. Ivan Cogley, Patsy Dill, and Fred and Rodger Ridenour, 3 years. The presentations were made by Randall Steim, the Sunday School superintendent and his assistance, Connie Dill.
1/17/1964 – A Ford City resident was the first graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania to receive a bachelor of arts degree from the institution during graduation ceremonies Sunday at Fisher Auditorium. Eugene S. Capizzi, son of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Capizzi of 550 Neale Ave, Ford City, was recipient of the liberal arts degree. He majored in natural sciences, concentrating on Chemistry.
1/17/1959 – Primary and secondary roads remained in dangerous condition in many parts of Armstrong County according to highway department officials. Snow removal and cinder crews have been working around the clock to make the highways safe for travel.
1/17/1959 – For three quarters, the Kittanning Wildcats battled arch-rival Ford City Glassers on even terms, then wilted in the final period to lose 56-41. The defeat gave the Cats sole possession of last place in Section One with an 0-4 rating while Ford City now has a 2-3 standing.

1/17/1944 – Fire apparently originated from an overheated furnace caused damage estimated by firemen at a couple of hundred dollars to Cowansville Presbyterian Church. The fire was extinguished by firemen of West Kittanning and Kittanning #6 hose companies.
1/17/1944 – Kittanning school directors announced that they had authorized purchase of the McCain property, across Vine Street from Central school building at a cost of $27,500.

1/17/1939 – Three New York youths including an eighth grade schoolboy, arrested by Pennsylvania Motor Police near Butler following the attempted holdup of a service station near Kittanning, were on their way to Batavia, NY to face charges in connection with a long series of holdups and crimes there.
