1/9/1969 – Athletic coach and youth leader Robert Thurbon received a watch from Richard Laube during a dinner meeting last night in which Thurbon was honored by the local Chamber of Commerce for his efforts in organizing and developing Little League baseball and midget football.

1/9/1969 – The Apollo 7 space capsule spent last night in the Kittanning Highlands enroute from Downey, CA to Washington DC, where it will be used in the inaugural parade. The wide-load rig pulled off since highway restrictions prohibit it from traveling in darkness. The 10,050 pound capsule orbited the earth prior to the Apollo 8 moon mission.

1/9/1969 – The Armstrong County Jail has remained empty for the past five days - the longest time that the jail has been vacated in 25-year memory of courthouse officials.

1/9/1969 – An Adrian RD1 man was charged by Kittanning police with failure to stop at the scene of an accident following a bizarre rash of hit-and-run accidents in the borough last night. Lawrence W. Wolfe, 30, was released on $300 bond after being arrested by police here and appearing before Kittanning Justice of the Peace Karl M. Watt. Authorities said Wolfe struck four parked cars and a building with a truck owned by the construction company he worked for.

1/9/1969 – The Elderton-Shannock Ministerium will sponsor observances of the Week of Prayer at community services beginning this Sunday at 8PM. Six services will be held, one each evening, with the exception of Monday and Saturday nights. There will be a different speaker at each service. The final service will be held on Sunday evening, January 19, at Elderton Methodist Church, with special speaker Rev. Dale Boyer, district superintendent of the Pennsylvania Council on Alcoholic Problems.

1/9/1969 – The Rev. Herman Mohney said today that numerous Kittanning and Ford City residents donated money, food, and other items tot eh Bread of Life Mission, a new congregation established last month in the basement of Steim Hotel in Kittanning. Mr. Mohney said that the mission is installing kitchen facilities and sleeping quarters so that those in need of a helping hand may be given a hot meal and a clean bed, as well as spiritual assistance. Services are held at the mission every Sunday afternoon at 2:30 PM.

1/9/1969 – Joe Paterno decided to return as head football coach at Penn State next fall and not take the head coach position with the National Football League Pittsburgh Steelers. Paterno told Dan Rooney, vice-president of the Steelers, he was turning down the club’s generous offer. Since Paterno took over as head football coach three seasons ago, the Nittany Lions have rolled up 24 wins while losing seven and tying one. They currently have a 19-game unbeaten string.

1/9/1964 – Dan Yapp, Kittanning printshop proprietor, became a four-gallon donor as he gave his 32nd pint of blood when the American Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Kittanning.

1/9/1964 – Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries announced today the promotion of Richard E. Weiske to chief electrician at Works Four in Ford City.

1/9/1959 – The home of William Fennell, Shelocta RD1, burned to the ground after being set afire by faulty wiring. The two-story frame house located on Route 210 between Elderton and Girty was a total loss.

1/9/1959 – Farmer’s National Bank began its 76th year on the same site, after three-quarters of a century of physical and financial growth.

1/9/1959 – Burglars entered two businesses in Rural Valley through the night and escaped with merchandise and power tools valued at over $400. Police Chief W. Gilbert James said the burglars took equipment from Rural Valley Lumber Company and cash and merchandise from McColgin’s Market.

1/9/1954 – Wage increases for nearly all 70 employees of Armstrong County will cost the county an estimated $12,000 a year. Wage boosts with a few exceptions were $15 a month for all employees.

1/9/1954 – Lloyd Myers, a Kittanning area trucker, escaped serious injury when his gas-laden tanker went out of control and overturned along Templeton Road near Cowanshannock.

1/9/1954 – Ford City Glassers came from behind in the last 33 seconds of a thrilling game to beat Butler 52-50 and grab the WPIAL Section One Leadership.

1/9/1939 – A Works Progress Administration crew, engaged in removal of abandoned rails of the old West Penn Railway Company on North McKean Street, has progressed from Chestnut Street to the High Street intersection.

1/9/1939 – The Rev. & Mrs. George F. Browne expect to sail January 13 on the SS President Coolidge from San Francisco to resume their missionary activities in Che-Foo, China. Mrs. Browne is the former Irene Cowen of Rural Valley.

1/9/1934 – The state liquor store in Kittanning, located in the Keystone Building, opened this morning – one week after inauguration of the State Liquor Store Controls system on January 2.

1/9/1934 – Mrs. Jennie McCoy, wife of J. Milton McCoy, died at her home on North Grant Avenue.

1/9/1929 – James H. Yates, 67, of Kittanning, died as did Millard F. Campbell, 76 of McGrann.
