Historical Headlines - December 12

12/12/1968 – Although the tax increases for the county, along with some local municipalities including Kittanning and Ford city boroughs, have been made public, the local tax picture in Armstrong County is still not complete. The missing link is the largest taxing body in the county – the Armstrong School District.

12/12/1968 – West Kittanning police chief William Evans said a car driven by Sue Reynolds, 43, of Manorville, went out of control, crossed the road, went over a 10-foot embankment, and rolled over onto its roof. Miss Reynolds, who apparently fell asleep at the wheel, was not injured. Another accident occurred on Old Route 422 when a car driven by John C. Heilman, 23, of Kittanning went out of control while trying to avoid hitting a car pulling from a driveway. He struck a tree, a carport, and another tree. Heilman and a passenger, Allen Lobb, both suffered minor injuries.

12/12/1968 – Senior Master Sgt. Steve Segal, a full time member of the California Air National Guard and a former resident of Ford City, has been awarded the California National Guard Commendation Ribbon with Pendant. Segal is assigned to the 144th Fighter Group. The citation praised Sgt. Segal for his exemplary leadership, management, and technical ability.

12/12/1968 – Bernard J. Richards Jr is undergoing basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, after enlisting with the U. S. Navy under the student program. Richards is a graduate of Ford City High School class of 1968. He is a son of Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Richards of 813-5th Avenue, Ford City.

12/12/1963 - The Middle Armstrong Co. United Fund has exceeded its established goal for the first time since its beginning 5 years ago.

12/12/1963 - Kittanning Area Senior HS has its 2nd foreign exchange student today. She is Jane Celeste Steele of Balwyn Victoria, Australia, who is a senior at KHS under the American Field Service (AFS) exchange student program. Miss Steele is making her home with the Robert Ralston family of Four Maples, Cowansville. Ralston is representative for the AFS with headquarters in NYC.

12/12/1958 - James C. Kunselman was elected new commander of James Arthur Ashe Post of VFW, Kittanning. Other officers elected were Russell Lemmon, vice president; Louis J. Poundstone, secretary-treasurer; and Robert Anthony and John Richardson, directors.

12/12/1958 - HS wrestling coach Richard Fowlkes announced that matches at tonight’s wrestling open house will serve as eliminations for starting positions in the team’s opening match next week against West Allegheny Joint HS.

12/12/1953 - A group of workmen mowing a right of way along The Baltimore and Ohio Railway tracks near Mosgrove stumbled upon a 56 inch blacksnake that well may be some kind of record one in this area.

12/12/1953 - Births at Kittanning and nearby were fewer in number than in any of the past 6 months, records of the local registrar of vital statistics show.

12/12/1953 - Ford City- Ford City American Legion Post has endorsed a proposal to have a roadway built south from Route 66 into Ford City borough at First St. A copy of the endorsement of the proposed roadway and a petition will be sent to the State Dept. of Highways.

12/12/1953 - Mrs. Michael Hand, 62, of 4th Ave., Ford City, died as a result of a heart attack.

12/12/1938 - With elaborate “warming up” operations at an end, the Allegheny River Mining Co. was to operate its costly new tipple at Cadogan at full capacity for the first time today.

12/12/1938 - Victorious Republican candidates for state assembly and Congress have filed expense accounts before expirations of the 8 December deadline. Assemblyman Frank J. Atkins of Kittanning listed no contributions and expenditures of $640.90. Assemblyman Herbert G. Gates of Kittanning listed a $100 contribution and disbursement of $241, plus a box of cigars for which he had not yet been billed for by the drugstore.

12/12/1933 - Lewis Shearer, 14 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shearer of the Freeport-Ford City road, died in Tarentum Hospital of wounds received when a rifle was accidentally discharged at his home.

12/12/1933 - Sherriff-elect I.D. Doverspike, who will assume office on the first Monday of January, has announced his assistants in the conduct of the office. George W. Shaffer will serve as deputy and Ben Ambrose will continue to act as clerk.

12/12/1928 - Ford City High School passers were defeated 31-14, by Freeport High School.

12/12/1928 - Mrs. Annie J. Thompson, lifelong resident of Bethel Township. was found dead in a rocking chair at her home.

12/12/1928 - Twelve additional helpers will be put on at the local post office to take care of the Christmas rush.

12/12/1928 - Miss Grace P. Miller of Ford City, a teacher in the New Kensington schools, died in New Kensington Hospital, of spinal meningitis.
