12/4/1968 – PPG Industries announced today that an executive task force has been created to develop plans for the eventual consolidation of the company’s production facilities in Ford City into a single unit in order to strengthen the operation’s competitive position and assure its continuance. The study involves Works 4, Works 6, and Shop 2.

12/4/1968 – Kittanning resident Jerry Cable, after 19 fruitless years, bagged a seven-point buck in Clearfield County. It made news!

12/4/1968 – The formation of a Kittanning funeral home partnership was announced today by the owner A. P. (Lon) Merwin and his new associate, Armstrong County coroner John R. Kennedy. Kennedy will be in charge of the business at 253 North Grant Avenue. The name will be changed to the Merwin-Kennedy Funeral Home. Merwin assumed ownership of the funeral home in 1958 upon the retirement of Robert R. Smith. ­

12/4/1968 – Don Hepler of Kittanning RD2 shot a 200-pound black bear while hunting near Renova. This was Hepler’s first bear kill. He used a 7-mm Remington Magnum shotgun.

12/4/1968 – A new study by Purdue University professor shows that about half the women and three-fourths of the men in America have full sexual experiences before marriage, and one of every six brides is pregnant.

12/4/1968 – The Philadelphia health commissioner said women are in better shape and they could save their husbands from heart attacks if they would help or even take over the job of shoveling snow. “The shoveling of snow may not be as much a stress to women in good physical condition who are used to doing housework,” Dr. Norman R. Ingraham said.

12/4/1963 - Richard White, Kittanning Junior HS faculty member, and Mrs. Avenelle Grafton, senior HS guidance counselor, have announced a new program for all freshmen in Kittanning Junior HS. Starting this Friday, all 9th graders will attend a series of assemblies designed to orient them with the various depts. in the senior HS and their aims and curriculums.

12/4/1958 - A check for $1000 was presented to James F. McLaughlin, hospital administrator, by members of the Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The money, which was realized from the annual hospital bazaar, will go towards the hospital building fund.

12/4/1958 - Ford City- Food and merchandise vouchers ranging in worth from $10-$18 will be distributed to striking Glassworkers by Ford City Glassworkers Union. Sam Saloum, president of the union local, said the vouchers will be presented at the Union Building, and workers will designate the store where he intends to make the purchases.

12/4/1953 - An 89 year old Kittanning RD 2 resident, William M. Patton, died of injuries received when he was struck by a car on Route 66 near his home. The retired farmer had crossed the highway to check his mailbox and was returning to his home when hit by a car driven by a Pittsburgh man. Mr. Patton was a former principal of Ford City public schools.

12/4/1953 - Ford City- Lions Club members are continuing work on the interior of the fire-gutted Andrew Armrose home, 703 1/2 5th Ave. near Ford City and expect to have the family back inside their home by 15 December, 10 days before Christmas. The Lions were to start working at 3pm today and continue until late at night.

12/4/1953 - Ernesto Salizzoni of Cadogan will embark from the port of NY aboard the liner SS Vulcania for passage to Genoa, Italy. He is planning an extended stay in Italy.

12/4/1953 - Two Kittanning men will have to sit back and let their wives tell the hunting stories. The women brought back the “buck” deer and their husbands came home empty handed. The women deer-slayers were Peggy Nulph and Ila Williams, wives of Donald Nulph and Robert Williams.

12/4/1948 - A 7 week old child died of suffocation as he slept in his baby carriage. He was the son of residents of the nearby Clara Vista section.

12/4/1948 - C.V. Dery of the State Theatre building, Market St., Kittanning, purchased a home at 244 N Water St. The dwelling was formerly owned by Mrs. John K. Kiser.

12/4/1948 - A total of 2861 hunting licenses for 1948-1949 were sold thru the Armstrong Co. treasurer’s office by December 1.

12/4/1943 - Five positive reactions were received when a tuberculin test was made on 202 students and teachers of Freeport public schools.

12/4/1943 - Lt. Merle Theodore Schall, American Navy Reservist, is MIA the Navy Dept. revealed. His mother, Mrs. Nancy E. Schall, lives in Elderton.

12/4/1933 - Harrisburg- The State Dept. of Public Instruction made plans to conduct civil service examinations 16 December for selection of 2000 or more people who will be employed in state liquor stores after January 1.

12/4/1933 - Frank E. Butler of here and James McCracken of Leechburg were in Harrisburg attending a school of instruction for men who will lease store rooms to be used as state liquor stores. The 2 Armstrong Co. men will be in charge of the leasing of rooms and locations in 9 counties.

12/4/1928 - The Rev. D.T. Scott has assumed duties as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Ford City.

12/4/1928 - The 2 year old daughter of an East Kittanning family drowned in 3 feet of water in a hole dug in the backyard of her home.
