The Christmas Toy Drive has begun, with the Ford City Lions Club leading the effort.
According to Brad Baillie, the history of collecting toys for local children began in 1990.
“Local entertainer Joe Alese used to belong to Lions Club in 1990. He started collecting toys at his church for kids. The Ford City Lions Club adopted as one of their main projects for the year. Joe passed away, but we are continuing what he started.”
Now through December 11, toys are collected through the Leo Clubs at Armstrong and West Shamokin High School and also Shannock Valley Elementary.
“Joe’s daughter, Carla, is a nurse at Shannock Elementary and calls businesses for donation also,” Brad said. “Their PTO also contributes. She gets many donations in her father’s name.”
On December 11, the Lions Club will have their annual Christmas Party at the Latin American Club in Ford City. That is when the toys will be given to the Salvation Army Lieutenant Luke Barney.
“This is my second year working with Lions Club,” Barney said. “They are very involved in the community, extremely friendly, and care about the folks here in Armstrong County. They go above and beyond to make sure the kids have a pleasant Christmas.”
Barney said the Salvation Army will distribute the toys on December 19 at the Masonic Lodge on Route 85. Last year, the Salvation Army provided toys to 480 local children.
“We match the toys provided by the Lions Club with the child the best we can,” Barney said.
nyone wishing to donate a new toy should bring it to Armstrong or West Shamokin high school (unwrapped) between now and December 10. Toys can also be donated directly to the Salvation Army on South Jefferson Street in Kittanning between 9AM-3PM Monday through Thursday.
