Historical Headlines - November 1

11/1/1968 – Buffalo Valley Dairy, operating in Kittanning, Ford City, Worthington, Freeport, Natrona Heights, New Kensington, and Creighton has been purchased by a Parks Township dairy owner. Harry B. Parks, owner of Farmers Delight Dairy near Leechburg, announced he will take over the dairy on November 4. Farmers Delight, originally a local supplier of dairy products, has been growing in size steadily during the post-World War II period and now serves a vast area around the Kiski Valley as well as all of the local districts.

11/1/1968 – Two drivers were admitted to the hospital for injuries suffered in two separate automobile accidents yesterday and today. Joella Smith, 52 of Bowser Trailer Court in West Kittanning sustained cuts on the nose and eye in a one-car accident at 3:15 AM today at the Kittanning Bridge. Last night at 10:45, a car driven by Paul Crispen, 23, of Johnston Avenue, Kittanning, crashed into an automobile hauling trailer on South Jefferson Street. He is listed in satisfactory condition with cuts and bruises on his face.

11/1/1968 – Army S-Sgt. Henry G. Steffy, Jr., son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Steffy of Kittanning RD6 (Garretts Run) was recently promoted to his present rank while serving in Tay Ninh, Vietnam.

11/1/1968 – A total of 225 high school students in grades 7 and 8 are enrolled in religious classes conducted every Monday evening at St. Mary’s Parochial School, Ford City.

11/1/1968 – Nomination of officers were held at the meeting of the Old Timers Progressive Club at the American Legion Hall in Rural Valley. Candidates for the 1968-69 year are: Richard A. Frederick, president; Richard Patterson, vice-president; Elmer Hayes, secretary; Howard Myers, treasurer; Lewis Schrecengost, sergeant-at-arms; and Edwin Boyer, chaplain.

11/1/1963 - Nearly 40000 ballots are now being distributed to Armstrong Co.’s voting precincts- although if past off year elections are any criterion, only about half of these ones will be used Tuesday by eligible voters. Both major parties are hoping to overcome the normal lethargy of voters in this kind of municipal election by stressing the importance of 4 statewide referendums appearing on the ballot and the selections of 2 Superior Court judges.

11/1/1958 - A general wage increase of 5-cent an hour was granted to Eljer Division workers in Ford City after an agreement was reached at midnight yesterday.

11/1/1958 - Patrick George, 18, of Spring Church, Star Route, underwent emergency surgery at Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital here for the amputation of 4 left hand fingers injured when caught in a corn husker.

11/1/1958 - Dalton Farester scored 2 touchdowns and Dave Brown tallied another one as the Ford City gridders downed Springdale 20-13 in the final home game for the Glassers.

11/1/1948 - A record single day hunting license sale was made this morning at the county treasurer’s office. More than 300 hunters made license applications.

11/1/1948 - Francis T. Benson of Locust St. has been appointed industrial commissioner of Pittsburgh and Shawmut Railway.

11/1/1948 - Men and boys from the 57 Presbyterian Churches of Armstrong and Indiana counties met in the First Presbyterian Church, Kittanning, for the 17th annual session of the Men’s and Boys’ Association of Kittanning Presbytery.

11/1/1943 - Coal production in Armstrong Co. slumped to less than 20% of normal as the majority of the county’s miners observed the practice of not working without a contract.

11/1/1943 - Ford City- As a crowd of 5000-6000 people looked on, Ford City’s war memorial, a tribute to all men and women of the armed services for all wars, was dedicated in Ford City Municipal Park.

11/1/1938 - International Night may as well have been celebrated in Kittanning last night, with all the “representatives” from the far corners of the earth in town for Hose Co. #1 community Halloween parade and celebration.

11/1/1938 - A 15 year old East Brady district boy is in critical condition in Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital and 2 other hunters were treated for gunshot wounds about the face and hands as Armstrong Co. took count of the accident toll of the first day of the small game hunting season.

11/1/1933 - Announcement was made of the opening of a new Lindeman’s Flower Shop at 128 N McKean St., under new management and ownership.

11/1/1928 - Armstrong County Sheriff William J. McCollum started the month of November with 25 prisoners in jail custody.
