Historical Headlines - October 17

10/17/1968 – Major John P. Murtha, Jr., a Marine Corps Reservist and Vietnam veteran, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Murtha is a candidate for congress in the 22nd Congressional District. He received his medal for “distinguishing himself by an act of heroism or extraordinary achievement while a member of the armed forces.”

10/17/1968 – The Reverend Walter Galbraith is planning transformation of the Rollercade to worship purposes for Reformation Rally of area Lutherans October 22. He was accompanied by Henry Livengood, chairmon of the site committee, which has responsibility for finding a building with enough seating.

10/17/1963 - The 49th anniversary was observed as members of the Needlecraft Club met at the home of Mrs. D.B. Young for a business and social gathering. Officers named were Mrs. Henry, president; Mrs. Mayme Hindman, vice president; Mrs. Young, secretary; and Mrs. Dorothy Masters, treasurer.

10/17/1958 - Kittanning patrolman Thomas Crissman was discharged from Indiana Hospital after being injured in an accident, whilst helping a friend at a strip mine near Sunnyside.

10/17/1958 - Edward Lattanzio, Cindy John, Japanese exchange student Noriki Miure, and Miss Pauline Smith are amongst 375 representatives from PA schools attending the 22nd annual convention of Student Councils in New Kensington.

10/17/1953 - At least 32 sailors and civilian ones were killed, 40 other ones injured, and scores missing when the aircraft carrier, Leyte, was ripped by explosions in shipyards drydock in Boston’s worst waterfront tragedy.

10/17/1953 - 39 pints of blood were collected during a 6 hour visit of the Johnstown bloodmobile unit at Grace Presbyterian Church, Kittanning.

10/17/1938 - Ford City- Motor police push safety drive; driver out of hospital is tried. Fines decreed as borough police war on drivers.

10/17/1938 - Signifying approval of the foremost medical association in America, Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital was awarded a provisional certificate of approval by the American College of Surgeons at the opening sessions of the 21st Hospital Standardization Conference in NY.

10/17/1933 - Germany plans return to league soon. 100 people get jobs in stores, under NRA.

10/17/1933 - A new boiler for supplying hot water heat in the Thompson Building, Market at N McKean Sts., is being installed by A.W. Dosch, heating and plumbing contractor.

10/17/1933 - Pernambuco, Brazil- The Graf Zeppelin, on a triangular flight to South America, Akron, Ohio, and Chicago arrived from Friedrichshafen, Germany. The big dirigible was moored at 8:15 am, after one of its speediest trips across the South Atlantic.

10/17/1928 - Hedge along both sides of the approach to the Market Street end of the Kittanning bridge was removed and transplanted elsewhere in the municipal park.

10/17/1928 - Lakehurst, New Jersey- The Graf Zeppelin, her pioneering passenger flight across the Atlantic triumphantly achieved, was moved into the hangar of the naval air station here.
