10/2/1968 – Hundreds of area soft coal miners are idle today along with thousands of others in several states in what United Mine Workers (UMW) leaders termed a misunderstanding over contract expirations. Allegheny River Mining Co of Kittanning has reported the entire union force of 160 employees is idle when miners did not show up for their 4PM shift. Canterbury Coal near Avonmore reported its entire union force of 105 are idle.
10/2/1968 – Joseph F. Kerenick, general chairman of the 1968 United Fund Campaign announced yesterday that 48% of the $135,000 campaign goal has been received. The campaign started Sept. 16 and will end October 15.

10/2/1958 - Ford City- 2 members of the Works 4 management staff ofPittsburgh Plate Glass Industries retired with a total of 84 years employment with the company. Joseph J. Gleeson, 320 11th St., began working as a trainee in the Pot House in 1919 whilst William Roy Walker began his employment in the Casting Hall in 1913.
10/2/1958 - A Dayton RD 3 boy, Donald J. Reeseman, is in questionable condition at the Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital following a 2 car head on crash with a pickup truck near Dayton last night.

10/2/1933 - Two men escaped serious injury when the car in which they were riding somersaulted down the west bank of the Allegheny River near the bridge and landed in the water. William Van Leer, Avonmore, driver and owner of the car, and Earl Hogenmiller, of this place, were slightly injured.
