The Richard G. Snyder YMCA Campus in Kittanning offers a variety of programs that those in the area can become actively involved with. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a program for anyone who have been diagnosed with cancer at any point in life.
“This is for anyone who have been diagnosed, for those who are going through treatment or those who have been cancer free for many years,” Healthy Living Initiative Coordinator Sarah Roudebush said. “On a typical day, we would work on cardio and strength followed by stretching and reflection. That is where the main support component comes. There are opportunities for participants to learn different things, for example when we had a dietitian come in and offered some instructions.”

Linda Farster (left) and Amy Jackson (right) officially completed the 12-week program on Thursday. They did not know each other before. Since signing up for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, the two have become good friends.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA finished up with its second session on Thursday. It is a 12-week research-based exercise and well-being program that was optimized to assist anyone 18 or older reclaim their total health.
While exercise is a part of program, the group also serves as a support group as well.
“The biggest benefit is that it gives me the ability of taking my mind off everything,” participant Linda Farster said. “We also get to know everybody pretty well. You don’t go through 12 weeks and exercise next to someone for half an hour without getting to know them.”
“There’s still some pain, but I feel overall my physical well-being is increased since joining,” participant Amy Jackson said. “I was a little leery at first, especially the exercise part. After some time I got to know everyone I grew more comfortable.”
Farster and Jackson both live in Kittanning. Since joining the program, the two have since become friends.
“We never met before this program, but we’re real good friends now,” Farster added. “We sort of compete and help push each other.”
Those involved with the program are able to work with trained staff members who will help individuals achieve set goals such as building muscle mass, improving confident or increasing endurance.
“The instructors here are so supportive, knowledgeable and very sympathetic,” Jackson said. “They never push you beyond your abilities.”
The LIVESTRONG program finished with 10 individuals during its previous session and finished with 7 this session. It is supported through the YMCA Annual Campaign, and comes at no cost to those involved.
