7/16/18 - Ellwood Calvin Burger, 39, of Glenshaw, who escaped from Armstrong County Jail with two other men APril 1, was captured last night by the FBI in Miami. He is wanted for prison breach and sentencing for burglary, larceny, and receiving stolen goods in connection with the robbery of Ball’s Jewelry Store in Ford City. Burger, Stanley Corbett, and Robert Manson escaped on the night of April 1 when they were able to prevent the door to their cells from closing electronically and forced open a solid steel fire door on the second floor with a strong, sharp object.
7/16/18 - The FBI today has issued a warrant for the arrest of Albert Anthony Esper, 29, of Homestead, charging him with being an accomplice in the June 25 robbery of the Merchants National Bank branch in Worthington. Authorities claim Esper drove the get-away car in the bank holdup in which Ronald Patrick WIlliams, 29, of McKeesport was apprehended while attempting to flee the scene on foot.
7/16/18 - Capt. Robert C. Lorenzetti, son of Mr. & Mrs. A. J. Lorenzetti of Kittaning MR10 (Butler Road) and a fellow captain have produced a mechanism which is predicted will reduce the possibility of aircraft accidents and preserve the aircraft’s life.
7/16/18 - Sales of PPG Industries for the second quarter of 1968 exceeded those of any quarter in the company’s history, with earnings advancing 12% over the 1967 period.
7/16/1963- Armstrong County will receive an allotment of 1650 antlerless deer hunting licenses for the 2 day 1963 hunting season.
7/16/1963- A Kittanning ladies apparel shop which has occupied the same location on Market St for the past 33 years will soon close its doors. SM Reisberg, owner of Reisberg’s Leader Store, announced that his health is the reason for his retirement from the business, which he started in 1930 at the present location in the 200 block of Market St.
7/16/1958- Boats and docks were saved from possible damage or destruction here by “the wonderful mutual cooperation of boat owners and townspeople”. A local boat owner said Sea Scouts, townspeople, and boat owners worked furiously during and after yesterday afternoon’s downpour to save thrashing boats caught when the Allegheny River rose suddenly.
7/16/1958- Olin Schreckengost, 20 month old son of a former Goheenville couple, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schreckengost, died today in Somerset Hospital as the result of injuries received in a fall from a window in the home of his parents.
7/16/1953- Official ones of Local Board #22 of the Selective Service System announced that Armstrong County will not have a draft call for the month of August.
7/16/1953- Armstrong County construction projects began to hum today after contractors granted a 15c across the board wage boost to members of an AFL laborers’ union.
7/16/1948- Mrs. Mae Barton, home ec extension director of PA State College, reported to borough police today that a portable sewing machine was missing from her locked car.
7/16/1948- Clinton- The body of Pvt. Phillip E Jack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Jack, arrived in Freeport from Columbus, OH. It was returned from France for burial in the McVille Cemetery.
7/16/1943- Francis A McGinley of Kittanning has been appointed of chief of a new division office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, which will open new headquarters on the 2nd floor of the Autenreith Building, 942-4th Ave, New Kensington.
7/16/1943- A 2 way battle for the Republican nomination for the office of county prothonotary, brewing for several weeks, got off to an official start today when John R Wray of Boggs Twp, present county treasurer, filed a candidate’s petition for that office. His opponent is Herbert G Gates of Kittanning, who recently resigned from the state Legislature to campaign for the prothonotary’s office.
7/16/1938- Thomas Miller, head one of Kittanning High School commercial dept. for the past several years, has concluded a 7 year service with the school district. School directors accepted his resignation at Friday night’s adjourned session of the borough board of education.
