Historical Headlines - June 26

6/26/1968 – State police arrested a 29-year-old Allegheny County man within three hours after he held up the Merchant’s Bank in Worthington yesterday. Ronald Patrick Williams of McKeesport was placed in Armstrong County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

6/26/1968 – Two cars were demolished and a house severely damaged in Elderton today at 8AM in the aftermath of a highway accident at the intersection of Routes 210 and 422. State Police said a car operated by K. R. McGahen, 64, of Meadville RD1 was struck broadside by a westbound vehicle driven by Nancy L. Gearhart, 20 of Kittanning RD1. After the impact, the Gearhart vehicle continued into the side of a house along the highway, causing $1,000 damage to the structure owned by John N. Ralston of Pittsburgh. A lone occupant, Mrs. Lottie Wyant, was not injured. McHahen was taken to Armstrong County Memorial Hospital and is in satisfactory condition.

6/26/1968 – Sun Oil Company executive Alex Konick advertised the new 3-bay Sunoco Service Station on Route 66 in Ford Cliff as being “for rent and ready for occupancy.” The gasoline company said it required a low investment for a high income facility.

6/26/1968 - A farewell party was held for the Rev. & Mrs. Richard Eddinger and family. The minister of the Wattersonville Methodist Church for the past five years has accepted a pastorate at the Methodist Church in Shippenville. They will leave July 1.

6/26/1963- Clarence A. Dobson, a veteran of 22 years service with Allegheny River Mining Company, was elected president of the company at a meeting of the board of directors.

6/26/1963- Waynesburg Borough Council recently named George K. Stennett, formerly of Kittanning, as Borough Manager.

6/26/1958- This year’s Cancer Crusade in Armstrong County produced over $13,000, it was reported during an executive board meeting in Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.

6/26/1958- Members of Kittanning Hose Company #4 are completing arrangements for the 3rd annual “Tournament of Music” to be held 19 July at Kit-han-ne Athletic Field.

6/26/1958- Louis Pechan was named president of the board of directors during a reorganization meeting of Kittanning Waterfront Corporation at the Steim Hotel.

6/26/1953- Mrs. Carlton Shank and her daughter Debbie of N. Grant Avenue, are preparing to go to Saint Mihiel, France, where they expect to make their home for the next 3 years. They will join Captain Shank, who is stationed at Saint Mihiel with the 85th Ammunition Supply Squadron.

6/26/1953- Miss Helen Bowser, daughter of Mrs. James Y. Bowser of North Avenue, has accepted a position as director of Christian Education in the Foster Memorial Presbyterian Church, Youngstown, Ohio.

6/26/1948- Mrs. Harry Hiles, an 81 year old Karns City RD 2 woman, is a patient in Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, suffering from a broken right shoulder received in a fall from a chair in her home. She was hanging curtains when she fell.

6/26/1948- Armstrong County Commissioners, with the approval of the County Controller, awarded a $2,117.40 contract to Bert W. Fleming of Kittanning for the painting of 8 Armstrong County highway bridges.

6/26/1943- Pvt. Jack Rosenberry, former druggist here who was stricken with a throat infection last April whilst at Camp Lee, Virginia, is reported “some better”. He underwent an operation recently at the Camp Lee base hospital.

6/26/1943- Congress cracks down on John Lewis. Presidential veto is overridden to enact antistrike measure. Congress votes whilst nearly half of striking miners remain idle.

6/26/1933- A 7 mile length of state highway, route 705 running thru Bethel and Parks Townships, will be improved this summer at a cost of approximately $280,000. Money will be appropriated from federal and state funds. The road, starting at Cook’s Park on the Leechburg road and ending at North Vandergrift, will be macadamized.

6/26/1933- Interest is mounting amongst alumni and former students of Ford City High School, who have been talking for years and yet have never been able to do anything definite about making a cooperative unit of those ones whose school days are over. Tomorrow night in a big meeting at the high school, a permanent alumni organization will be formed.

6/26/1928- James Muir, 7 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Muir of North Water Street, drowned in the Allegheny River at Hazel Street.

6/26/1928- Mrs. Catherine George, 26, died at her home in Distant.
