The Wal-Mart parking lot in the Hilltop Plaza was nearly empty of vehicles at 5AM this morning. Workers said that since sales are spread out over several days, there is no longer a rush to get the best deal during Black Friday early morning hours.
EAST FRANKLIN - It was once considered the largest push to get customers motivated to get up before the crack of dawn on the day after Thanksgiving.
Black Friday shopping turned into a frenzy several years ago as customers broke into fights, and even some trampled trying to get into the stores at 5AM to get the bargain.
Stores not wishing to endure law suits decided to spread the deals over several days and take advantage of the entire Black Friday weekend.
The parking lot at Wal-Mart in the Hilltop Plaza in East Franklin Township was nearly empty. Unidentified store employees said Wal-Mart began sales last night.
“It started last night at 6PM and is still going on. We have different sales on different days. Last night was the biggest. The rush was yesterday. Today will not be too bad, but still will be busy,” the employee said.
There were two shoppers who made their way to Wal-Mart shortly after 5AM today. Tracy Suwala of Ford City said she got up at 4AM to start her pilgrimage to the land of sales.
“(I’m looking for) A good deal! Just anything. We are just out shopping. We have nothing on our mind. We are just going to see what we see. (We go) every Black Friday. My daughter and I - it is a tradition for years.”
