Apollo Cancels Moon Celebration

A fraternity of men dedicated to fun and fellowship, the Syria Shriners always cause local residents to laugh – like they did in this photo from 2013 – during the Apollo Moon Landing Parade.

An annual event that got its start when Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969 has been cancelled for this year.

It has been known as the Apollo Moon Landing Celebration. At one point, it was a major fundraiser for the local fire department, but now has dwindled down to being unprofitable. Organizers say that declining attendance as well as conflicts with the amusement company that has handled the rides caused the decision.

The fire department has used proceeds from the event to fund equipment purchases in the past.
