You may or may not remember your high school prom. However, senior citizens over the age of 55 can enjoy those days once more.
The Worthington Senior Center is hosting its first-ever “Senior (over 55) Prom” on Saturday, May 13.
Helen Booher, Worthington Senior Center Manager, said you don’t have to wear a tuxedo or prom gown to attend.
“Casual dress, or if you can get into your old prom gown, then fine!”
DJ Steve Heffner will spin the old-time recordings tailor-made for area senior citizens.
“Relax and sit back and listen to oldies,” Booher said. “No heavy metal! Quite a bit of country if I had my way!”
Booher, who is in a wheel chair after suffering a stroke, still works every day to plan activities at Worthington.
“I have to come up with things to do and offer for our center. This way, people can see what Senior Centers do for their clients.
Booher said you don’t have to live in the Worthington-West Franklin area to attend.
“Its open to the public - anyone. I have people coming from Butler, Rural Valley, Templeton, all over. As long as you are 55 or older. Tickets are limited. I only have so many tickets to sell. Tickets are available at each Center, and anyone on the Site Council has tickets to sell, or at the Worthington Senior Center.
She added that tickets are also available at the Armstrong County Area Agency on Aging. For information, call 724-548-3290. Tickets are $5 each, or you can get two tickets for $10.
“This one will be our first. If it is a success, we will have another one another year.”
Booher said the success of the Worthington Senior Citizen Center is due to her helpers.
“I have a good group of volunteers and I have young people coming in from one of the churches. We are a working Center.”
The Area Agency on Aging will honor the volunteers of all twelve senior centers in Armstrong County on Wednesday, May 10, Older Americans Day.
