Stellar Season Ends With State Semi-Final Loss for Lady Wolves

The West Shamokin Lady Wolves ended their season just shy of a PIAA 3A State Championship bid, but that should not take away from their historic season.

This season the Lady Wolves posted a school record 27-3 record, won their conference championship (Heritage Conference), and West Shamokin won the District 6 Championship.

In the State Semi-Final game Tuesday, the Lady Wolves battled until the end. West Shamokin found themselves down against the Bishop Canevin Crusaders 20-16 at half-time and the game would remain neck and neck until the end.

The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle before the Crusaders took an 6 point lead that the Lady Wolves quickly answered.

After two consecutive 3-pointers from West Shamokin’s Shelby Clowser, the Wolves trailed by just two before intentionally fouling a Crusader. Bishop Canevin would close the game out at the line, winning 43-39.

After the game West Shamokin Head Coach said a loss like this is really tough, but added he and his team have a lot to be proud of.

“A close loss, a 4 point loss is worse than a 40 point loss, because right now you think of every layup we missed and I think of every coaching mistake I made. Should I have done this? Should I have called this play?”

“But in the grand scheme of things to be the last public school left in 3A in the state, to be in the final four in states; it’s just amazing what these girls have done. They united communities, people who haven’t seen each other in years and years are seeing each other here at our games. It’s not just the West Shamokin support it’s Armstrong (county) support, from Kittanning to Ford City, teams in the Heritage Conference and Indiana County have come to watch us and I feel like we were all united on this run and that’s really special,” Nagy said.
