More than half of the female population at Elderton Elementary attended the first “My Guy and Me Winter Wonderland Ball” January 27.

The event, hosted in the former-Elderton High School gymnasium, invited girls in grades Kindergarten through sixth to bring a special adult male – such as their father, uncle or grandfather – for the inaugural dance.

PTA President Paula Byers said PTA members were inspired to host the dance after seeing about a similar dance at Lenape Elementary in Manor Township.

“I had seen they had had them in the past, and I knew through people that they were a pretty-big hit so I brought it up to the PTA to think about having one,” Byers said. “It was a semi-formal event.”

Volunteers and parents decorated the gymnasium in balloon arches with round tables around the “dance floor.” Photographs were also taken for free and given to each girl.

“The girls had an absolute-fabulous time, and they can’t wait to have another one,” Byers said.

Byers said PTA members are also brainstorming a “My Gal and Me” event with games and activities for K-6 grade boys that will be held perhaps next month.

Both events are expected to be held annually.
