The West Shamokin Wolves (17-2) varsity girls basketball team was able to set a new school record for wins in a season on Saturday against the Northern Cambria Colts (4-14), and on Monday the Wolves extended the record with a win against the same Colts team for senior night at West Shamokin.

Before the game started West Shamokin’s six seniors were celebrated as their parents escorted them to the end of the court. Wolves Head Coach Frank Nagy knew he had a special group of seniors when the team first got together in April.

“It’s a great senior group and they’re great leaders. We talked about it back last April when we first got together for when we started going over some stuff with the girls. (In April) we said we needed senior leadership this year, we have a very experienced senior group. We have six seniors, three of them start and the others work very hard every day and they’re good motivational teammates. They’ve helped us get to this point and have really been on the forefront of that and it just has to continue,” Nagy said.

As for the game, it was just another day in the office for the Wolves.

West Shamokin held a 29-14 point lead heading into half-time, and that lead would only grow in the final quarters.

In the third West Shamokin went on a 11-0 run to take a commanding 40-19 lead over the Colts. In the fourth quarter the Wolves continued to pour it on for a final score of 57-32.

With these past two wins West Shamokin secures home court advantage in the semi-finals of the Heritage Conference Championship where the Wolves will see either Blairsville or Homer Center.

West Shamokin will be back home Wednesday, February 1 for a big game against Punxsutawney Chucks (12-3), with tip-off set for 7:30 PM.
