The Armstrong River Hawks wrestling season is well under way and on Wednesday they hosted a tournament which saw wrestlers from Armstrong, Fox Chapel, Valley, Keystone Oaks, Derry, Oil City, Slippery Rock, and Knoch.
The River Hawks put forth good effort and walked away with first place finishes in two different weight classes - at 132 Derek Grafton and 220 Ogden Atwood.
Along with two first place finishes, Armstrong walked away with two second place finishes at 145 Mat Vukovich and 152 Donovan Ashe.
Third place winners from Armstrong included Mayce Wonderling (126 lbs), Austin Pinkerton (138), Gram Hepner (195), and Josh Strobel (285).
Afterwards River Hawks Head Coach Brandon Newill said he was proud of his teams performances.
“I feel like we did a good job. The guys came out and competed and we had four in the finals and we have two champions, Derek ( wrestled really well and so did Ogden. A lot of thirds out of the third and fourth place matches. There’s still a lot to work on, but I think they wrestled pretty well today,” Newill said.
The team winner for the tournament was Derry, followed by Armstrong at second, and Fox Chapel at third place.
Armstrong’s next match will be at Plum on January 4, at 7:00 PM.
