More than 5,500 cookies were baked and decorated by Lenape Technical School’s Culinary Arts students the past few weeks for those residents who felt too rushed this holiday season (or just had a sweet tooth).

Even Culinary Instructor Andrea Fahlor chose to buy from students rather than bake at home, adding to the approximately 470 dozen sold altogether.

“They’ve done several drop cookies, formed cookies, rolled cookies, filled cookies – an entire cookie lesson in two weeks. (Students) should be cookie experts,” Fahlor said. “Baking, mixing, baking icing, decorating – they’ve all had the opportunity to do a little bit of everything.

“We actually doubled our cookie order this year from last year.”

Some of the cookies students baked and decorated include gingersnaps, sugar and with Hersey kisses.

Fundraising dollars are deposited in student accounts to help pay for uniforms, field trips and shop clothing.

Fahlor recalled one couple who bought nearly 20 dozen this year.

“Just for the two of them – they love the gingersnaps,” Fahlor said. “They’re regular in the restaurant. The husband buys them without being rolled in sugar and the wife buys hers rolled in sugar – they’ve very protective of each other’s cookies.

“They’re a lovely couple.”

Something about the gingersnaps also has the craving of Senior Gabe Johns, of Cadogan.

“I don’t know what it is about them, but anywhere else I won’t eat them,” Johns said. “Just something different about them, but I don’t know what it is.”

Staff members at local schools also were represented some of the cookie orders.

Senior Becky Fry (from the Armstrong School District and shop vice-president) said lady locks were the most popular cookie sold. Teachers and students sold more than 140 dozen lady locks.

Senior Kiera Moorhead, of Templeton, sold cookies to her aunt and friend. She enjoys eating no-bake or chocolate chip cookies the most.

Culinary students also adopted a family with two children through Community Action this Christmas.

In addition to finishing cookie orders yesterday, students attended three catering events and participated in the school’s door decorating contest – receiving Fahlor’s praise.
