Valley Township Tributary Cleanup Held this Weekend

A statewide retailer will lead efforts to clean up a local tributary this weekend.

Outdoor brand United By Blue has teamed up with environmental non-profit, Keep PA Beautiful, and a number of local partners to cleanup an Armstrong County tributary of Cowanshannock Creek that has been serving as an illegal dumpsite for over 15 years.

The dumping, which occurred more than 15 years ago, consists of mostly tires; however, over time, rubber tires may leach toxic chemicals into the water source, which leads to the Allegheny River.

United By Blue plans to remove about 6,000 tires from this site as a part of its water conservation mission.

Volunteers can meet the United By Blue team near the tributary at 276 Adams Rd., Kittanning, Friday or Saturday - December 9 and 10 -, and can volunteer in the morning (9AM- noon), afternoon (noon - 4 PM), or all day.

United By Blue will provide all cleanup supplies and lunch will be served to all participants. All volunteers should wear closed toe shoes and dress in layers to stay warm.

United by Blue does not write checks or accept donations; rather co-founders Brian Linton and Mike Cangi seek to make a measurable impact on ocean conservation through company-organized cleanups.

“We believe it’s our responsibility to preserve where we play, which is why we prefer to roll up our sleeves and remove trash ourselves,” Linton said.

Some of the organizations teaming up with United By Blue to help this weekend be successful include Bradigan’s Inc., McLaughlin Family Enterprises, PJ Greco, Rosebud Mining and Valley Township Supervisor Andy McKinley.
