More than a dozen Armstrong School District students participated in a variety of wellness activities last night at the West Hills Primary School gymnasium.

Facilitated by Dayton and Shannock Valley Elementary Art Teacher (and Fitness Facilitator) Lynn Donnelly and HEALTHY Armstrong Project Coordinator Trisha Brice, students jumped rope, surfed on Spooner balance boards and were able to climb on the school’s climbing wall.

Donnelly, who facilitates Shannock Valley with Health and Physical Education Teacher Lori Gamble, said a similar fitness night at Shannock Valley Elementary was held earlier this week, which included more than 100 students walking and jogging six laps around the building and playing games.

“When I started, I wanted to move more. It felt good,” Donnelly said. “That’s my goal this year: got to start moving more.”

Students also ate healthy snacks with ASD Director of Food and Nutrition Services LuAnn M. Fee and relay raced to fill their MyPlate.

Brice explained MyPlate – which was previously only to encourage diabetes education.

“We had different food models out from all the different food groups. When we were kids, MyPyramid was how you learned about nutrition – which they since switched to MyPlate – which is a great alternative,” Brice said. “It shows you half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables, that you should have protein with each meal, grains and dairy as well.

“Whoever filled their plates accurately first was the winner.”

By completing all of the stations in the gymnasium, participants were eligible for prizes – including T-shirts, balls and other gift bags.
