Ongoing Camp Cadet Receives Local Support

Manor Township supervisors (L-R) Don Palmer, Bob Southworth and Paul Rearick voted on a donation to the weeklong Camp Cadet program in June after discussion with their solicitor. The donation was approved 2-1.

A weeklong summer camp at Lenape Tech in Manor Township received some local aid before it started this week.

After a few township meetings, Manor Township supervisors agreed to donate $100 to the Camp Cadet program – which is coordinated through the Pennsylvania State Police in Kittanning.

Supervisor Don Palmer suggested the donation in May, but supervisors had to double-check with Solicitor Andrew Sacco.

In May, Palmer also said he would personally be making a donation.

“It’s a good cause for the kids and we need to support that. Anyone that can support that needs to support it, Palmer said.

“I’m a strong believer that if kids have something to do, chances are they’re not going to get in trouble. It’s really important.

The donation was approved 2-1, with Supervisor Chair Paul Rearick in opposition.

Even though Rearick said he was a supporter of the camp, Rearick was leery of using township funds for other organizations.

“And, I agree with that. That’s why I voted against it,” Rearick explained. “I personally have made donations to Camp Cadet – when they do their (motorcycle) rides. I’m not against Camp Cadet. I just feel taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be donated to an organization.”

Rearick compared the Camp Cadet donation to ones that have not been made in the past to provide fireworks during the former-Ford City Heritage Days celebration.

Rearick has spoken to cadets in the past as Chief County Detective prior to his retirement.

Supervisors also considered tapping into capital reserve funds.

All this week, boys and girls ages 12 to 15 are introduced to various law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, Secret Service, local police departments, sheriff’s offices and units of the state police - such as the aviation patrol unit, vice unit, computer crime unit and special emergency response team.

Tomorrow morning, cadets are also scheduled to tour the Armstrong County Courthouse and meet the judges and District Attorney Scott Andreassi.

Yesterday, cadets learned about firearms through the Ford City Sportsmen Club, the “Drugs Kill Dreams” drug prevention program through Magisterial District Judge Gary DeComo and first aid/CPR.
