Christian Woodside on the mound strikes out one and tags out another in the 5th inning, but Worthington falls to Saxonburg 15-2.

The Worthington 15/16 year old baseball team went up against Saxonburg in a game that was close until the end last Friday.
It has been a rough season for Worthington so far. Heading into the game against Saxonburg, they had yet to win a game, with a record of 0-6. For a while though, it looked like Worthington may have a shot to turn the bad luck around.
In the fifth inning, Christian Woodside came into the game to relieve Worthington’s starter, Shimpeno. Woodside was able to make some pivotal plays in the inning, including striking out one batter and tagging out another who tried to steal home on a wild pitch. Assisting Woodside to make the play at home plate was back-up catcher and coach’s son, Badac.
“He’s (Badac) our only back-up catcher so he stepped up to the plate tonight and he’s definitely come a long way in the catching position. I’m very proud of him for making a nice play at home plate tonight to throw the guy out. You can’t ask anything more of a back-up catcher. It’s nice to see these guys working together and working hard,” coach Matthew Badac said of his son and team.
Once Worthington was able to get out of the top of the fifth without a run crossing home plate, it was their turn to try and make something happen. Cousins got on base first and stole two bases to get into scoring position at third. Badac walked the next play and was able to steal second before Woodside got hit by a pitch to load the bases.
With the bases loaded, this was the best chance that Worthington had to make a dent in the 7-1 Saxonburg lead. Hoffman was next up to bat and with one out and bases loaded, he was able to hit an infield sacrifice RBI to make the score 7-2, Saxonburg. Unfortunately for the home team this is when the rally ended, and Saxonburg went on one of their own.
In the top of the sixth inning Saxonburg was able to string together eight runs and close out the game with a final score of 15-2.
The final score doesn’t really tell the story of the game, and Worthington coach Matt Badac is still proud of his team.
“Unfortunately right now we’re 0-7, but we have played a bunch of great teams from Kiski to Natrona to Saxonburg. We have seen some very good pitching and very good opponents. Overall, I think our last game at Highlands really solidified that we need to try harder and make some serious adjustments and then play to those adjustments. We did that tonight and up until about the fourth inning, and then we started to fall apart a little bit. This team is young though, but I think we have a lot of good baseball players on this team. There’s a lot of learning, but I think our best games are ahead of us, and I’m excited to get back out there.”
