CWM Environmental Merges with Clarion County Laboratory

As of January 1, CWM Environmental of Kittanning purchased Stewart Laboratories of Strattanville (Clarion County). Both companies are locally owned environmental service laboratories.

Stewart Laboratories was formed in 1976 by Margie Stewart to provide analytical testing for the coal industry. While remaining family owned for two generations, Stewart Labs continued to evolve to service other environmental regulation testing for soils, water and waste.

However, with changing markets, Stewart Labs began to consider merging with another company to help alleviate rising costs. With the same environmental roots, CWM was the logical choice for such a merger.

“We are very excited to have Stewart Laboratories become a part of the CWM family,” CWM Environmental President and Owner David Kohl said. “By merging their facility into ours, we will have the capability to provide a wide array of analytical testing and their customers will have expanded environmental services to choose from.”

CWM Environmental began in 1985 to service the mining industry but has since expanded to offer drinking water and wastewater operations, groundwater monitoring and sludge hauling and dewatering in additional to accredited analytical testing. “These additional services should prove convenient for many of Stewart’s customers to stay in compliance with government regulatory standards.”

Two years ago, CWM acquired Cleveland-based Precision Analytical to expand their geographical service abilities. With the acquisition of Stewart Labs, CWM expands their analytical accreditation capacities.

Lee Stewart, owner of Stewart Laboratories, stated “The transition of our practices over to CWM has proved effortless and beneficial. While we both work with testing, we each have separate equipment and capabilities. By combining them we are doing something great for our clients.

“Their practices are very much in line with our vision, and their operations are consumer friendly with real-time online (analytical) results, something our company did not offer.”

Since both facilities are located in Western Pennsylvania, they will be consolidated into one main location in the West Hills Industrial Park in East Franklin Township. This is a new, larger facility, which is one of many new buildings in the West Hills Park, a Keystone Opportunity Zone.

At the groundbreaking in April 2015, Armstrong County Commissioner Chair David Battaglia, called CWM Environmental “a local success story.”

With the continued company growth, this statement proves to remain true.

“Its exciting to know that with each year we find ourselves with new opportunities. We have to keep up with the ever changing needs of our customers; a larger facility and more services will allow us to do that.”

The company has started to consolidate and is expected to be completed by late spring. Until that time, the facilities will operate separately as one entity.
