Doloris and Don Waugaman have for years filed a joint tax return each January, but the return was a little bit sweeter this year.

Doloris, or affectionately known as “Dee Dee”, was the second Kittanning resident this week to win a $1,000 check from the tax preparation service H&R Block.

The married couple of 58 years are one of 32,000 people nationally that will win $1,000 from H&R Block during the first month of the tax season. Anyone who files their taxes in a participating H&R Block office by February 15 and has a valid e-mail address can be automatically entered into the sweepstakes. A winner is drawn every day of the promotion and awarded the $1,000 prize.

“I’ve done taxes with H&R Block all my life except two times – when I went to an inferior outfit and I didn’t like it,” Don said.

A retired U.S. Marine after more than 30 years of service, Don recommended his son also file with H&R Block to possibly win. The couple filed about two weeks ago.

“In the beginning, I wasn’t sure this was real,” Don said.

He said his wife might want to give money back to their church – Christian Missionary Alliance along Route 422 East.

H&R Block Enrolled Agent Pam Rupp said winners have been named from every U.S. State and Puerto Rico. Another of her clients is also reportedly a lucky winner and will receive his $1,000 check early next week.

Office Manager Shelley Drummond – an H&R Block employee in Kittanning for 19 years – hoped even more local residents are named winners before February 15.
