OBIT: Mark Pennsy (Rural Valley)

Mark Pennsy, 89, of Rural Valley, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the VA Medical Center - Oakland, PA.

He was born on April 27, 1926 to George and Margaret (Oswalt) Pennsy of Philipsburg, Pa.

Mark was a WWII Veteran serving during the “Invasion of Normandy” on D-Day. After serving his time in the U.S. Navy, Mark worked throughout the local area ebbing and flowering with the fluctuations of the economy.

He later worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Rural Valley serving as a Civil Servant for more than 20 years.

He later devoted 10 years in volunteering to tutor young men and women in preparation for their GED.

Mark loved to read and felt that the ability to read is paramount in attaining the American Dream.

Mark is survived by his daughter Lavina J. “Cookie” McGill (and fiancé Lee Leiner) of Butler; son Mark A. “Buck” (Anne) Pennsy of Punxsutawney; five grandchildren: Alan L. (Kate) McGill, Ryan C. (Ida) McGill, CW4 Paul F. Sherry, Mark A. (Dr. Tanya Martof) Pennsy and Kelly A. (Greg) Skarbek; and seven great-grandchildren: Daniel Stambera, Joey and Josh Pennsy, Jake, Ben and Brooke Skarbek, and Desiree Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty J. (Whittaker) Pennsy – who passed away November 19, 2006 -; and seven siblings.

Friends will be received from 9-11AM Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Carson/Boyer Funeral Home in Rural Valley.

Funeral Services will immediately follow at the Rural Valley Cemetery with Military Honors.

Pastor Dennis Howard will officiate.

Burial will take place in Rural Valley Cemetery.
