Ford City Avenue Paving Might Still Occur

Work along Ridge Avenue in Ford City might still occur later this summer after a petition was made by local residents for repair.

Even though Ford City Borough Council decided last meeting to push back its 2015 paving plan, paving might indeed be completed this year on a two-block roadway.

The main roadway discussed Monday night included Ridge Avenue - which runs parallel between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Planning Commission Member Tyson Klukan said Ridge Avenue was not initially proposed.

“We were talking about it – it’s not on paper yet. It’s not official, but we were looking at that next year,” Klukan said. “Council wants the Planning Commission to give a whole list of alleys, avenues and streets by the end of this summer. We’re trying to create a strategic paving plan.”

Recommendations are based on the need and severity, based on a walkthrough by council members, engineers and borough planners.

Borough Council Vice-President Jerry Miklos started the discussion after council members received a petition from street residents asking for repairs.

“The list given to us from the Planning Commission did not contain Ridge Avenue. Ridge Avenue is very bad, as are most of the streets and alleys in Ford City. Most of them are in deplorable condition – they all need repaired,” Miklos said. “Our premise at this point is to make sure before we do any more surface work that the underlying infrastructure is sound and will have proper drainage.

“That we won’t have to go back, tear up road and waste money.”

Borough Manager Eden Ratliff said patching was already completed along the roadway.

Klukan said Borough planners are busy this summer coordinating a plan - including sinking roadways that cause safety concerns.

“The Planning Commission was asked by Council to revise our paving list after the April or May meeting. That new recommendation was 12th Street between 4th Avenue and 3rd Avenue, 3rd Avenue from Family Dollar to 14th Street, 3rd Avenue from 6th Street to 8th Street, 5th Street from 4th Avenue to 3rd Avenue and 6th Street from 5th Avenue to 6th Avenue.”

Councilwoman Vickie Schaub recommended even extending into the side street rather than stopping at the alley.

“We need to do it, and do it right. It’s time to stop Band-Aiding everything,” Schaub said.

Miklos said there is good possibility the discussion will continue next month at the August regular meeting. He said there are limited resources for roadway repairs.

No repair projects have been put out to bid yet this summer, according to Ratliff.

Are there any grants out there in government space to be looked into about improving the safety of our roads?
